AMD CEO Speaks Out Against Intel's "Illegal Tactics"

The truth is somewhere in the middle. Intel does play dirty and continues to do so; it's all but been admitted by Intel that they're giving kickbacks to people like Dell to use Intel processors. But is it as dirty as AMD charges? I doubt it. I think this is AMD being louder than usual after realizing just how screwed they are right now.

Wow, what an e-wiener battle going on in those comments.

I'm still not sure whose is bigger, or which is the fake one.

intel has won thus far, especially getting the top (or was) computer maker to use only their chips, they made a ton of money, but more importantly made an name for themselves in the processor field. It's going to take alot for AMD to come back, but i'm hopeful they'll make something great for their next chip

Since when is this not old old old news. I was witness to this over 10 years ago. I just assumed it was common knowledge, by now. I also assumed it would never change until some politician bribe checks started to bounce, or until the marketplace forced manufacturers to meet the consumer's buying demands.

And of course, criminals never change, until forced to.

What about AMD charging? Their product was better and people where willing to buy it. I didn't buy an FX. I bought a 3200 that costed me 140 dollars at the time and overclocked it to 2.4. It was much better than paying 200 for a prescott at 3.6 GHz.

I don't know who is more greedy, the people wanting it for more or the people wanting it for less.

Intel did more than just give kickbacks. They constricted the supply chain to a lot of chip makers and retailers who didn't follow Intels lead. Intel did not just treat, they punished.

With the seemingly failed launch of R600 (I know it's getting better, but getting better is not the same as starting off well) and the release and apparent hold on performance of Intel's Core 2 Duo with price cuts to come, AMD has alot to be concerned about. I don't want them to go anywhere, but they need to create a superior product that consumers want in order to stay competitive, rather than crying foul over some silly rebates.

Make processors and GPU's that people want, and they will buy them. End of story.

Wow just saw this on AnandTech.... 🙁

Is Intel really this dirty?</end quote></div>

Uhh, yeah? This is business.

Dell is facing a class action lawsuit from its own investors over ?secret and likely illegal? kickbacks by Intel to ensure the exclusive use of its chips inside Dell computers. ?Computer manufacturers are dependent upon Intel's ?rebates? for a large portion of their razor-thin operating margins and must sacrifice their brand in favor of promoting Intel,? Ruiz adds.
It's more profitable for the company to go with Intel, so they do. Let's not forget that they also sell AMD systems.

Let me guess, everything you know about the law, you learned by watching Barnaby Miller and Night Court reruns. Since when did illegal bribes and illegal kickbacks become reclassified as legal rebates?

So, AMD fails on execution, over-extends itself in a price war, tries to hard on FAB production, smashes its financial position with a poorly timed and stupid acquisition, and now its only hope is to have its ass bailed out by a lawsuit.

Personally, I think the board needs to can the whole executive staff for utilizing the company has a giant piggy bank for the last 4 years and completely f'ing up the company beyond recognition. They took what was a great lead in technology and an awesome position of power after Intel's poor strategic decisions, and squandered it.

AMD is quickly being relegated to the Rambus and SCO column.

Intel's tactics have been known for yeeeeears, this is nothing new and just plain stupid to attack AMD for complaining.

The timing of it all makes AMD and Hector look bad.

Agreed, but the Intel FanBoys never listen. Not 10 years ago, not 5 years ago, not now.

...wondering if IBM had sided with Motorola almost 30 years ago, how much better things would be today...

Yeah, because everything can be delineated into fanboism.

All 3 of my computers (my desktop, and both my own and my wife's notebooks) have AMD processors.

My opinion has nothing to do with "fanboy", but from a realistic perspective. Hector needs to go.

qft. it's funny how microsoft has gone through so much anti-monopoly/trust stuff over the years when intel is a much worse offender that's gotten away with their shenanigans.

I believe Hector is looking for sympathy as the stock holders are looking into ousting him from the company.

With all the bad news and rumors surrounding AMD, they're going back to old tactics.
A few years back might have worked but with their success in the last couple of years, it'll be hard to make their case.

I gotta say, even though it makes AMD look a little whiny, Intel is wicked dirty. They need to get slapped with a lawsuit. I hope this leads to an anti-trust investigation of their business practices. On a side note, I better sell my stock if they do!

Oh yeah, and the only chips I've ever bought are AMD. Ever since they came out with the 1ghz Athlon slot A and beat Intel to the 1gig mark. The 1ghz slot A was the first pc I built.
