AMD Catalyst 12.3 WHQL Released

edit: found out the issue was afterburner, once i uninstalled that, the artifacts went away.
what other tools are there besides afterburner for overclocking? since the built in is severely limited

I believe ATI (excuse me AMD), just now recommends installing over the old ones if you are just upgrading to newer version.

If that works, then fine, if not, then driver sweeper/cleaner is the only thing that will get those installed.

Their installer isn't very good at all.

I always use Driver Sweeper. The AMD installation packages leave a lot of shit behind even after you uninstall it all manually.

Fresh is best.

I also use CCleaner to clean up the registry entries, and ATIMan Uninstaller at the end of it for the final nuke. Its a hassle, but only a 10 minute one.

I've learned my lesson not to use driver sweeper at all. When people say it really screws up necessary files on windows 7, it's so true. Driver sweeper was fine with the older windows but with windows 7, on my system and other systems i've build, really does more harm than good.

I used driver sweeper back then to get windows to do a clean install and install the standard vga drivers. In the past with windows 7, uninstall, use driver sweeper, windows always kept installing older drivers from somewhere even after using driver sweeper. So frustrating! And plus CCC would sometimes work and not work.

Now with a fresh format I stay clear from driver sweeper on any machine. The newer drivers uninstall perfectly and installs the standard vga driver and since have never had a issue with ATI drivers.

Same goes for using driver sweeper for my ASUS sound cards, screws everything up!!!

Rc11 as a 7970 owner basically is the only stable driver worth installing still...and it delivers wake up from sleep issues...

How is 12.4 beta working out for anyone or is it working,or could it work?

Uninstall ATI Catalyst from "Uninstall program" and then Remove all AMD software. Then reboot in safe mode and uninstall Display Adapter in DeviceMgr if it's not Standard VGA Adapter. Then install new driver in normal mode.
I've done MANY reinstalls, often of older versions on all 4 Win OS-es (XP, Vista, 7, 8) and never had a problem doing it like this.
Some "shit" will still remain, but is usually overwritten with reinstall. I was told that MS makes it hard for uninstallers to properly clean everything.
I only do Driver Sweeper and similar if I'm switching ATI->nVidia or vice versa.

3 options for installing drivers in my view-
1. I use DriverSweeper just because I have a ritual worked out and I believe I've had issues in the past without doing this install ritual- don't remember correctly 100% and don't care.

2. Probably be OK just uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling new version.
3. Otherwise install over existing and don't worry about it until you run into a problem.

With larger, systemic driver changes, I'd probably want to do 1 or 2. Problem is you don't know when they are doing large underlying file renames/ restructuring. Best option is probably to do #3 until you run into problems then do 2, then 1 if that doesn't work. 🙂


These drivers seem good, and everyone calls these releases worthless but I keep seeing things fixed with each release that are issues not listed in the launch pdf.

I was very pleased by 12.2whql and this release seems to be just as good.

Well that POS flickering bug in Skyrim, I couldn't get rid of it no matter what settings I used. It appears it might be fixed now with these drivers at least. Though I've dumped my 5870 so it's a little late. 🙁

SOOO.. Skyrim has major bug issues with high FPS and going over 60. The issue is Vertical Sync is 120 due to my monitor, using my 680 and setting my Adaptive VSync to half display rate has corrected all the issues with the flickering and other wacky crap with Skyrim.

Thought I'd share for anyone else that has animals and water flickering and other weird physics problems. Sorry for digging up an older thread!

Skyrim's engine is designed to run at 60FPS. The weird glitches ensue when it doesn't. However, it's generally capped there, although I'm not sure how that changes with 120Hz monitors.
