I am trying to gather some actual user information on the cpu cooler packaged with the AMD Athlon (boxed). Any information/opinion would be helpful.

Does anyone have any positive or negative things to say about the quality or performance of the cooler?

Does the cooler provide suficient heat dissipation so the cpu can run at its peak?

AMD coolers usually provide mediocre cooling. They aren't that bad...but not that good either. But they do the job. Don't expect ANY overclocking though

Does the cooler provide suficient heat dissipation so the cpu can run at its peak?

Yes, that is why it is included with the processor. Otherwise, amd would market some "high performance" coolers and make $$$

If you're not overclocking they are perfectly fine. Otherwise AMD wouldn't have bothered including them.

the cooler is fine, i have been using mine with my 1700+ for a few months now. i wouldnt say "NO OVERCLOCKING," i have had mine overclocked from 1.47ghz to 1.58ghz (between 1800 and 1900 speed i think, bios & windows calls it a 1900+) and i have never seen a temp over 49C under the heaviest load

The AthlonXPs came with a Coolermaster heatsink. I wouldn't call it mediocre, I would call it "adequate". The fan is a 60mm Delta that is rated at 28cfm/38dBA. Yeah, not that great, but not that bad either. Expect temperatures between 50-60C. Contrary to popular belief, 50-60 is not that bad.

I found the Delta too loud, so I added a 80mm Panaflo H1A with a 60mm-80mm adapter on my Coolermaster HS, and that has kept temps down pretty well. I have my 1700+ rig overclocked to 1.53GHz (1800+). It's nothing to be excited about, but I ran into non-heat related Windows and programs crashing if I went higher.

Where did you pick up the 60-80 adapter and fan. I just installed a Boxed XP 2000 for a friend and she thinks the fan is too loud. Was it expensive and how well does it work? Thanks.

Read AMD reports and you will find out that they state CPUs work OK at temps near 80C. These HD/Fs will do a fair job if not overclocked! I get very excited if temp gets near 50 C. The small fan that is supplied does not move enough air to suit my tastes. I used the heat sink from a XP1600 and mated it with a Delta slowed with a resistor from 6800 to 6000 RPM. With slower speed the Delta was not as loud and got temps of 40C @ idle and 44 C under heavy load.

Another writer on this thread asked about adaptors to use larger fans. Every report I have read stated that since axial fans (the type fan used) do not work effeciently when used against pressure. This is what happens when 80mm air flow is compressed into 60mms. On the other hand on my new PAL 8045; used an adaptor to convert from 80mm to 92m with great success. Reason being that the PAL heat sink is in exhaust rather than a blower mode. I was able to use the 92mm fan to "suck" through a 80mm hole with good efficiency. Since 92mm fan was running at a lower RPM it moved a lot of air and is much more quiet than a 80mm.

Before you try reversing fan direction read this last sentence!! Due to typical design of most heat sinks; they do not work as well in "sucking" mode.

I have a retail XP1700 and hsf set and they worked great in my opinion. I never see its temps above 45 degrees C. Under mild use it will stay as low as 32.
