AMD Barton2500+ or 2600+/333, which is faster?

Hey guys,

I know the Barton has the bigger cache compared to the 2600, but the 2600 has the GHz advantage. The only benchmarks I've been able to find so far that include the 2500+ is on Tom's Hardware and the 2600 did a little better on aps; the Barton did a little better on games. Looking for some 2nd & 3rd opinions, anyone know of any other benchmarks or which is faster?

I'm likely to overclock a little since I have some Corsair DDR400 RAM. Also what's a good HSF that is quiet? I'll sacrifice o/cing for quietness :)

Thanks for the help.

I'd get the Barton and a SLK-700 with a Panaflo L1A, Vantec Stealth, or an Enermax whisper. The extra cache on the Barton is what keeps it competitive with the higher clocked 2600+ and they both have about the same overclocking potential lately from what I've seen so the Barton is going to be the better price/performance solution IMO.

The extra cache help mucho when doing any sort of number crunching - for example, my Seti@home runs significantly faster now that I'm running on a Barton (at the same clock speed I was running my prior Tbred at, though at the faster 166 FSB ).

Well for 96$ shipped with a stock fan I can use for a client's build saving me a couple bucks I just ordered a Barton 2500+ from Newegg so I'll compare it to my 2100+ 0302 for overclockability and performance. In particular the "snappier feel" everyone talks about ;) Damn I'm glad I didn't buy one a month or so ago when they where still $150+ :light:

I concur that the clockspeed for the 2600+ and 2700+ chips is faster. I just like the extra ummph the additional cache that the Bartons provide.

Wow thx for all the feedback :)

Like I said the only benchmark I've been able to come up with that had the 2500+ (Tom's Hardware) had that CPU and the 2600+ virtually neck and neck and they both cost around $100 @ newegg. I'm more inclined to go with the Barton just for the extra cache.

DAPUNISHER, I'd like to know how your o/cing goes once you get it. I read at HardOCP that the 2500+ didn't overclock a whole lot but that was a few months ago.

Some people are running their 2500+ bartons at 200x11 = 2.2 GHz. This would be XP3200+ specs for < $100. Sweet.

I wonder what kind of cooling they have? I'm running my XP2100 TBred B at 10.5x200 = 2.1GHz @ 1.700v. I have an AX-7 and a 34cfm fan on it.

I have one of the 2500BARTONS on the way...if I can get the same 2.1GHz out of it, I'll be happy. :)

Ok, that's it. I've got to go get a NForce2 mobo today!

I have to admit , with the prices of 2600+ now around the £85 mark here in the uk, its almost not worth overclocking

Newbie question, that Panasonic Panaflo L1A fan that was recommended above is 24Volt so how would that work exactly? 2 12V connectors from the powersupply?

It should be here Thurs or Friday so I'll LYK how it goes but I expect it'll do well because most the people getting them from newegg now are getting good results.

Mine's a 2003 week 4, and I hit 2.2 on 1.75 volts... I would imagine some of the newer ones are more like T-Bred B's... hitting 2.3, 2.4 and even 2.5 Ghz.

Mine is a 0315. I hit 2.2ghz on 1.7 volts. It went to 11x200 with no sweat. I haven't gotten down to really pushing it cuz it is so rock solid as it is, but I have no doubt it will do 2.3ghz if I really wanted to test the limits of it.

Hey, these results are encouraging! Mine might be here by Friday...if not, then Monday. :(

I got the retail one...I wonder if that means it was made earlier than the OEMs? WE shall see. :)
