I heard a rumor that the multiplier on the Athlon xP processors is locked and can not be changed. Is this true! I hope not

It appears that the L1 bridges are under the substrate. You have to use a dremel tool to get to them. Then you void your warranty. Here is a link where someone has done it. Dremel tool work on a Athlon XP This makes me wonder if it would be better to get a Thunderbird 1.4 for less money and overclock it.

There's a post around here somewhere from somebody who has an XP processor and was overclocking it. I think he claimed to have the XP1800 (1.53Ghz) up to almost a true 1.8Ghz.

you can unlock the chip by connecting the l1 bridges with a window defogger kit, no more pencil tricks i think, the lead doesnt stick to the new material the chip is made of. i think fiberglass? some organic substance

edit: just read, some minor accoplisments, the multi still not completely unlock, some people report getting 11x and some get 10x.
