I'm glad to hear you guys still think the XP's are still a good chip. I've been wanting to put together a HTPC for a while and really want Soundstorm, which is only available on NF2 MB's. Which, of course, only support the socket A.

I've been putting off the build just cause I'm nervious about buying such "dated" technology, but maybe the 2400-M and the NF7-S will give me many years of HTPC bliss. 🙂

If you want to do what I think is one of the huge pluses for a HTPC you'll need a Pentium 4 to really get going. That is use the HTPC to upscale 480p DVDs to 720p resolution with FFDSHOW filtering.

Just something to look into.

So the P4 is the way to go, huh? In my current computer, I am now using a P4 2.53GHz, but for some reason I was going to go with the AMD setup for the HTPC cause I have heard such good things about the Abit NF7-S. Is there an equally good MB for P4 with the Soundstorm?

Maybe I can move my current P4 to a new HTPC and then buy a new AMD 64 system for my main computer. 😉

Why spend more for less?

The A64 myth is busted.

My 100MHz fsb 1.8MHz Pentium M is just a tad slower than my 210MHz fsb Mobile 2400+ at 2310, and as seen from above links, that is about as fast as A64 3400+.

It would take more than double the price for an A64 to top the overclocked Mobile 2400's.
And you would still be stuck with having to buy a sub-par motherboard with crap audio.
If you have a NF2 motherboard with Soundstorm, you will definitely be going backwards by moving to A64 platform.

With the dual core Intels (based on the Pentium M Dothan mobile) coming out at end of the year, or first part of next year, now is a terrible time to change platforms. Plus, Dolby has announced a new standard that most makers will be using that will be similar to Soundstorm. All of us with Socket A's waiting for the right time will soon be very happy we waited. The rest are suckers. 😉😛😉

how can you tell if your Mobo supports the mobile chips? is that something that a manufacturer would say about their desktop boards?

Doesn't matter for most.
I'm using a Shuttle that does not support it, so it defaults to 6X multiplier.
Added a jumper to the CPU socket, and bingo, 14x multiplier.

take a look at the threads here:

Don't buy this. Get the Mobile 2500+ or 2600+. You can overclock those chips like a mother.

I'm running my 2500+ (1.8 Ghz) at 2.4 Ghz (200 FSB) which is easily 3200+ territory. And it runs cool at that speed too.

Not a threadcrap, just info for any perspective buyers - the mobile is where its at.

Not my 2600! It won't do 200mhz FSB and my ASUS A7N8X won't do higher than 12.5x multiplier. I get errors at 2375 and 183fsb with 1.725v 😛.

Use the jumper wire trick in above link.
Make sure the errors or limits are not memory related.
