Whichever is cheaper.

Monarch has had a coupon code to get the 170 for around $355 shipped. I dunno if its still valid but... THat would be your best bet. I have the coupon code if you need.

opterons are best for overclocking and/or sever based setups. i'd definetly recommend the X2 4200+ any day.

Depends somewhat on what you are doing. The extra cache does seem to help with things like video encoding, and the Opterons seem to get slightly higher overclocks. Not that my 4200+ @2.618Ghz on the stock cooler is any slouch either.

If you're going to overclock, the Opteron will be better. They OC better, run cooler, and it has more cache.

If you're NOT going to overclock, the 4200+ will be better because it runs at a higher frequency. The extra cache on the Opteron is not enough to make up the difference in frequency in MOST games (some benefit from the extra cache).

Clock for clock and cache for cache, the processors perform nearly identical in gaming. They are the same CPU, except Opterons have been validated for use in servers (therefore more stable, cooler and rated for 24/7 running time).
