I just built a new 1 GHz AMD Thunderbird system and everything went fine. I installed Windows 98 (second edition) and everything was great. When everything was set up with the computer, i started to use the computer with Win98 and realized that frequently my mouse would pause on the screen for a few seconds, then everything would resume working fine. Then after a little while, it would freeze up again, and then AGAIN it would be okay. I'm not sure why i keep getting these short freeze-ups on my computer (i can't move my mouse or anything). These freeze-ups never last a long time (usually less than 5 seconds), but they occur frequently.

Here are the system specs:

Abit KT7 non-raid board
256 MB PC133 memory
SB AWE 64
Jaton Ge-Force2MX video card
Generic network card

I've heard that the video card could be causing the problems. I'm completely lost and could really use some help. Thank you so much for your guys's time.

not saying that this is the problem, but.......
I've had similar troubles with my KA7, having the CD-Rom/or Burner on the same bus. I swapped the CD-Rom to the secondary IDE, and the problem went away.
Like I say, this may, or may not be the problem.

You don`t say what PSU you are using, also check it`s AMD approved,& make sure you have no IRQ conflicts,Btw I also use a Geforce2 MX card on a MSI K7T PRO board,900 T-bird but don`t get any problems you like what you mention, check you are using latest drivers for mouse,& what Nvidia drivers are you using? I use 6.31,you could try the beta 6.47 drivers but I don`t think it`s a Graphic card problem.I would start with PSU & mouse drivers for solving this problem.

I have a similar problem. The only difference is the fact that I can move the mouse cursor. Frequently my computer hangs for a while and it runs so slowly at that time. It takes at most 2 seconds. I dont know why it hangs. Are there anyone who can help me too?

Make sure you have the latest drivers & motherboard BIOS installed... I had similar problems with my KA7-100 when I first got it but it was nothing some patience and updating couldn't fix :)

I have built an Athlon 700 and a TBird 1.1 gig. The 700 runs 98SE and the 1100 runs Me. I did not install any 4 in 1 drivers on either, and have NO problems whatsoever. I still don't understand what those VIA drivers really do.

I believe WinME comes with support for Via chipset boards,The Via 4 in 1 Drivers are for Win98 OS etc & they improve stability & increase performance for those using Via chipset boards.
