AMD Athlon Overclocking

So I've heard alot about AMD overclocking and i want to overclock my 550mhz Athlon using the pencil trick. I kinda know how to do the pencil trick after reading over at least 25 articles I just need to know if its possible on my computer. hrmmm can really remember what kind of mobo i have but i can post a message in this again when i get home and give you what it is. If you dont already know i have a 550mhz AMD Athlon. So the question is.... can i overclock it if my mobo supports it.

hey guys..... can you even do the pencil trick on a SLOT A?? I thought it was a bit harder than that... as well.. motherboard is as much an important requirement in OCing as the processor is

on SlotA's, there's no golden bridges like there are on socket A's. what you need is a GFD(Gold Finger Device) but i'm not too sure where you can get them, sorry

I use the K7OC GFD... its one of the cheapest available. It doesn't have cache settings (L2 cache runs at best 300, so at 700 or so you will need to lower it), but you can might be able to do it from bios depending on your motherboard (download the latest from the manufacturer's website). With the GFD you can probably get 50-200mhz extra. without a GFD, you won't get more than 50 mhz stably (by changing FSB speed - slotA mobo's dont like overclocked fsb speeds)

so basically the gfd wont help w/ o/cing the fsb? I have an athlon 800 and wanted the fsb speed higher, would i get much or no?

If you have a classic K7 Athlon Slot A cpu then there is NO pencil trick available to you. You are thinking of AMD Durons and Thunderbird processors that you can use the pencil trick on and those are socket A processors. You need to buy yourself a GFD like toph99 said. If you want to buy one, try going into the For Sale/Trade forum and ask if anyone has one for sale. I just purchased one for $20 shipped. You're motherboard doesn't matter too much when it comes to overclocking the classic, but there are instances where some motherboards just don't aren't that good at overclocking. You are going to have to rip the case off the Athlon to overclock as well and because I'm so nice here is a LINK to all your questions on how to do that and about GFD's. good luck

Entity23 to answer your question...I doubt you'll get much going via the FSB to overclock..maybe somewhere in the neighborhood of 103 to 105 on the FSB. I personally would go the route of using a GFD. JUST MY .02 worth

Right now I'm running a classic athlon 700 @ 820. Voltage is 1.75 set in the bios (MBM 5 lists the voltage at 1.8) and fsb @ 117, w/o a gfd. It's on an Abit KA7. I might be lucky. From what I've read, not too many people hit over 110 fsb. IMHO, this is an awesome MB with cache control if you have the latest bios. Hereis a screenshot of WCPUID. I've been running RC5 for over 24 hours and still no glitches. Average temp is 42C (is that high?) Point is, if you want to OC, the FSB is still an option, but I would love to have a gfd in my hands 😀
