AMD Athlon II X4 640 + 6950 or 2500k + GTX460/560

If you’re building brand new then I’d go with the 2500K. The latter will last quite a while but the Athlon is already long in the tooth.

And while some people will be tempted to say "oh, you'll get perfectly good framerates on an Athlon, your minimums will just be a little lower," take a look at the numbers for Starcraft, RUSE, and Metro 2033. Not a chance. The i5/i7 kills AMD in modern games.

games that were in development for 5 years and can't even make use of 3 cores are NOT "modern" games lol
