Why does my processor speed keep jumping from what it's supposed to be to like 10mHz. it goes from 800 to 10 every couple seconds. i'm monitoring this with wcpuid. Where is my problem? is the motherboard bad? is that why i get really bad FPS in games and 3dmarks2k1? please help me fix this...

some thunderbird chips are marketed as 800Mhz only as a marketting ploy. They actually have an average clockspeed of around 400Mhz, but peak at 800Mhz with a fluctuation core technology AMD uses for marketting "high clock speed processors" at prices cheaper than intel. if you want a TRUE 800Mhz athlon look around the web for a list of steppings which offer full 800Mhz performance, it shouldn't be hard to find.

Ignore Wcpuid for a moment, what kind of fps are you getting, in which games, ...etc. Do games run fine then slow to a crawl, then run fine again? Do you have a virus program or other program always running in the background?

About Moorehed's comments: I think he might be confusing the SlotA Athlons cache speed and processor speed. In which case, he would be wrong, the L2 cache speed on an 800 would be less than 400mhz.

I'm getting 75FPS now with UT but i just flashed the BIOS to the latest one. i have swapped processors with another and it does do the same thing. i just flashed the bios and i think it fixed something. but now it doesn't register faster than 2mHz in wcpuid or 3dmarks2k1. but the FPS are faster. if i reinstall the OS will that fix it? And Norton AntiVirus 2k1 is running. PC Pitstop tells me it's an Athlon 805mHz.

if you're getting 75 fps, there's no way its running at 400 mhz, or anything less than 700 mhz. assume the software is wrong.

I know 2 ways to replicate your results:
1. Run VMware, and cpu measuring software within the virtual machines. For some reason, the RTC was wrong for me, and I'd get values from 1-1700 mhz (tbird 700).
2. have a broken RTC (unlikely)
