i was looking on which cpu would fit my budgit and i found the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ for 120$ on pricegrabber.com . It has a speed of 2.4 GHZ without being overclocked. So im just wondering if this one is better than the opteron that costs roughly 40$ more.

Thats about right, although I'd still say it's a great deal. The performance is great, it won't OC like a C2D though. The Opterons are typically just hand picked to be better chips (probably more from the center of the wafer) and therefor tend to OC better. If your going to run at stock speed, there isn't really any reason to go Opteron over X2.

I just rebuilt my pc with that processor and it flies. Much faster than my old P4 3.0ghz at multitasking and games. Good price as well.

Actually, Brisbanes tend to top out at 3.1 ghz which also tends to be the upper limit for s939 and AM2 Opterons on air. There really isn't any advantage to going with an Opteron unless you want the extra cache.

I just pushed 2 3600X2 Brisbanes past 2.6G an little core or ram volts. One will go to 2.8 in a snap but I need to move it to a better board. The 4400 is not in the $120 range making it an Excellant choice and lower power. The Optis are better if you need some raw power and putting it in a good MOBO.

You should get in on that Fry's deal where its an X2 4600+ and ECS 6100 mATX mobo for $119.

Oh wait, you're in Indiana. Sorry!

AkumaX,

Have a link at all? This deal wouldn't be on in the Atlanta area would it? What model ECS board is it specifically do you know? Thanks in advance for any info.

Edit to add: FOUND IT! Thanks... now to see if it is in the Atlanta area.

Well I can't tell from the add what areas are carrying this combo. Here is an online copy of the add. I am calling my sister first thing tomorrow to see if Atlanta has it.
