AMD Athlon 64 & AGP

Hi,
Am a newbie, so please bear with me.
Planning to buy a new CPU; AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0Ghz based.
Branded Compaq SRL1310IL. With Asus K8S-LA motherboard (Compaq ref name Salmon-GL6E). Says it has an 8X AGP slot available.
I have an existing NVidia GeForce 5200 ultra 256MB graphics card (AGP), which I want to use in the new CPU. Are there any known issues between this card and the motherboard? The local dealer and Compaq support are a bit clueless.
Don't want to dump my existing graphics card (I like it), or buy a new one...

So you have a P4 motherboard in there right now? (I haven't heard of any of these motherboard models)

You're going to need to get an A64 motherboard to use an A64 processor. That's going to add around $100 to the cost of the upgrade.

What are you hoping to accomplish with this upgrade? (more gaming performance? etc.)

I know you said you wanted to keep your videocard, but if this is just a gaming upgrade and you're on a budget, just getting a new videocard for now would be more cost effective. You could get a 9800pro for around $125.

Am not a gamer! So didn't need a very fast graphics card.
Hence, the 5200 is more than adequate for MY use.
I like it because, it works well for me and hasn't misbehaved (so far!)

Ok, gotcha.

If that's a P4 motherboard though, you're still going to need to replace that though.

You'll need to upgrade your motherboard for AMD CPU. However, if you are buying the new nForce 4 chipset, since they offer PCI-express slots for graphic card only, you'd need to upgrade your graphic card.

Or, buy nForce 3 the older generation chipset, which still supports AGP

For nForce4 you should upgrade your power supply to 24-pin ATX 2.0.1 compliant though

He could also get a VIA based board.

I have the soltek K8Tpro with a 3200+ and a 9800pro and it's working great.

I'm changing the entire CPU box; motherboard, processor, et al.
Buying branded from Compaq. This new box has an Asus K8S-LA motherboard and ships with an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0Ghz processor on board. So, that's a given.
But, don't want to end up with a new CPU box and not be able to use my 5200 graphics card, or having to spend more on a new card. Yes, am on a budget too.

Ok, CPU = processor

If you mean the whole case and everything in it, say computer.

So, you're getting a new system but want to know if the motherboard will support your AGP card?
Do you have a link to the specs on that board you're getting?
If it doesn't support AGP, I think you'd get better off getting a budget PCI-e videocard than spending $75 or $100 on getting an AGP board to keep using the 5200 ultra.

So, are you getting a nice sweet deal on this?

Are you getting new ram, powersupply, etc too?

Yup, it's a new system, without a monitor, but complete with power supply, 1.0GB ram, HDD, etc.. Excellent deal; by the standards of my country. For a branded Compaq product that comes with on-site warranty...required here, big time...
The P4 1.6Ghz system I currently have struggles with some of the video editing work that I do. Hence, the choice of the AMD Athlon 64, as a somewhat logical upgrade in system. The data sheet of the new Compaq AMD-based system states that it does have an 8X AGP slot, but am unable to get confirmation anywhere...that the 5200 will work on it.

If it has an AGP 8x slot, your 5200 should work just fine :thumbsup:

Does it have windows already installed on it? The only thing would be that you might need to install the drivers to get your card to work, but you can just get those from nvidia.
