I thought the Sempron sucked compared to the Athlon AM2

AM2 is just the socket type, its still just a single core athlon64. A Sempron 3200+ is basically just an Athlon64 3000+ with less cache. In my opinion, you either upgrade from a single core to a dual core or you don't upgrade at all. Dual cores are only $40 more.

I thought the Sempron sucked compared to the Athlon AM2

The A64 has 4X the cache and a higher MHz. I think the $10 reference was based on the $20 cost. 😉

Yes, it will work as long as you have the correct socket, there is really no difference other than cache size between Semprons and Athlon64s, except for their speed codings (a 3200+ a64 is 2.0, a 3200+ sempron is 1.8)

As far as the deal coming back, dont hold your breath- it was a closeout end of life deal, it wont come back- and none of us even know for sure if you have an AM2 socket,
bottom line- even at $20, the a64-3200 wouldn't have been a worthwhile upgrade over what you allready have.
if you want better performance, and actually have an AM2 socket, get a dual core cpu for only $40 more (or less considering that other cpu had to pay shipping and most likely tax)

To each their own. Since "normally" no socket AM2 CPU goes for under $30, I think the guy can get this chip and sell his AM2 Sempron, ending up with an upgrade for around $10-15 out of pocket.

As for getting a dual core, that's actually not a terrible idea, however you could have chosen a better one. Looks as if you just choose the cheapest one without paying attention to what it was. That one is a half-cache 90nm chip - yes, dual core A64 x2 with only 256k cache. I'd go for one with at least 512k cache starting at $2 more.
