I was able to get on my hands a Sempron 3100+, so I decided to test the difference between an A64 3000+ and the Sempron 3100+ (both socket 754) in the same system configurations.

Please forgive me for the lack of other popular benchmarks (Doom3, Halflife2, etc) as I didn't have those available.

You can check it out here:

Nice work on the review.. I think more people would be perfectly happy with lesser CPUs than ever know it. How many random PC buyers would ever care about having more than a Athlon XP 2000+ or so?

I dont see the 3100+ Sempron as a bargain because a 2800+ A64 is about the same price & it's just as fast plus you get 64 bit support.

Find me a 71$ 3100+ sempron, newegg has them for 113$

Read how much he paid for his sempron
Obviously "it's still a bargain since it's only 71bucks." is refering to that.

As for the price, retail from newegg on 4/10/05:
Athlon 64 3000+ S754:$146
Athlon 64 2800+ S754:$120
Sempron 3100+ S754: $113

I'm refering to the sempron "he got", not the retail versions.

"it's still a bargain since it's only 71bucks"
I'm already know the price of a "new" sempron, but I never refer to that.

EDIT: I want to ask you how much he paid for that sempron, $71 or $113?

He must have got a used chip since there's no way he paid 71$ for a new cpu.

Anand did a review a while back & in my opinion the A64 2800+ is a much better bargain than the 3100+ sempron.

No, it was completly new in box. Opened the box up, retail fan UNUSED with the thermal pad thing still intact, Sempron cpu spot free, no traces of heatsink compound. I was actually all over looking at the CPU making sure it wasn't used. Original seller sold it because he bought it thinking it was a socket A or something along those lines. Ebay is selling the semprons for cheap, they're going fast.

Anyways, you guys made a fuss over the price in this thread ;) that's alright with me, I guess.

So everything is clear now?

If not let me clear it up again:
the chip is sold at around $113, he got it at $71 new, now if that's not a bargain I don't know what you think of it anymore.

Budman, your statement is suggesting that I don't know anything about the differences between amd athlon 64 and sempron 3100+, sadly you're wrong, if you don't believe me search and see what's my rig consists of (and that's a 7 months old rig)

EDIT: This is my last post in this topic and I don't to argue it anymore, since everytime I post it is no more than clearing up again and again.

It's an interesting review, but your final commentary about the Sempron 3100+ running a bit cooler are a tad misleading. The 130nm part you reviewed is not going to OC as well as the newer 90nm Sempron 3100+ parts. In fact, I'd rather get the Sempron 2800+ for OCing, unless the low 8x multiplier proved to be problematic.

Also, it would have been more fair to benchmark the Sempron 3100+ at stock speeds vs the Athlon 64 2800+ at stock speeds. They run at the same clock speed, and have similar retail pricing. Such a review could highlight the effect of l2 cache difference on performance.

Yes, I wish I had a 64 2800+ to benchmark it out, then it would have been much more fair. But I think the benchmarks that I put out were pretty much fair to show the difference between the Sempron and the 3000+, in which, the differences were very minimal.

When I was running the 130nm cpu though, it constantly stayed atleast 4-7 degrees under my A64, and I thought it was worthy to comment on that. I'll probably edit it in the end so people can get a heads up about the difference.

Yeah, this was done on Anand before though. Good job with taking the time to do it, though. I'd also recommend a 2800+ sempy for those on a budget. The low multiplier is a problem only if you wish to hit 2.6 with it, assuming you have the 90nm version. I would imagine it actually is very plausible to get these on eBay cheaper than retail, as things that are not very popular tend to have a much lower than normal value on eBay.
