Hi all,

I'm currently using an A7V133-board with a duron processor. In the near future I prefer to upgrade to an athlon processor. Of course I can choose for the Athlon XP (which is supported in the BIOS). But I would rather wait for a while and buy a .13 um version of this chip with 512 kB on die cache. The .13 feature will probably give me more overclocking flexibility and the advantage of a larger cache speaks for itself. The strange thing is that I only find reviews about the K8 Hammer architecture. This processor will definately be build with the .13 um SOI process. I thought DRESDEN is already equipped with .13 um lithography machines. I wonder if somebody can give me information if and when a .13 um Athlon (socket A) will be presented by AMD.

Thanks,

THH

here is AMD's most recent roadmap:

if you want to translate it, go through here:

looks like the 0.13 um chips (the "thoroughbred" core) will not be out until the first half of '02. if this holy war between *ntel and AMD stays hot and AMD doesn't go out of business, it might come out sooner rather than later.

edit: the 0.13 um SOI chips aren't due out until the second half of that year. that is the "barton" core. of course, "hammer" should be out by then.

An AMD Athlon on a .13 micron process won't be out until Q1, at best. Whether or not it will have 512kb of L2 cache is unknown right now. However, there's a good posibility it will happen, since the smaller the die, the more cache memory you can "fit" onto it.

Anyway, I think you're smart to wait for the .13 micron Athlons, because they will likely hold the performance crown for a while until the Hammer takes that spot, since the current Athlon XPs are consistently beating the competetion. :D

EDIT: The codename for the .13 micron Athlon is Thoroughbred.
