I was installing a new heatsink when 2 corners of the die cracked...

now my computer wont POST :(

My KG7-RAID supports up to XP2100+ (I'm guessing 2200 also)

which AMD CPU should I get as a replacement? (cost/performance)

The 1600+ is by far the best price/perfromance at the time....

One thing though....When are you guys going to just get pissed with these fragile AMD chips??? I eman this is ridiculous AMD had never integrated a heatspreader to protect these cores....It is a shame the shear number of ruined chips by putting on a heatsink...Very Sad!!!!

I'm fuc*ing pissed as hell, my 3 year warranty is now good for nothing.

The sad part is - my copper shim sort of jumped out of place, causing my heatsink to not apply pressure evenly causing the crack.

if I hadn't used the shim, it might have went ok. :(

I found that applying some AS2 to the CPU ceramic body it would "adhere" to the shim.

but that's 20/20 hindsight.

now I need to shell out $100 for a new CPU, $100 for a new HD (75GXP failure), and $100 for more RAM for my laptop. ugh

You used a shim, and still cracked the core???
Have your neighbor install your next CPU. :p

It's very sad how many dolts don't take the time to put a heatsink on correctly.

Contrary to popular belief, the vast, vast, VAST majority of people who have installed an AMD processor have had no troubles. All you hear about is the people that break theirs. That said, I've never broken a single processor in the 100s that I've installed. In fact, I find it extremely difficult to put a heatsink on the wrong way and have a boo-boo. Take the time to do it right and ditch the useless shim. I much prefer NO heat spreader - I like my core right up against the heatsink.

Dolts eh?

The first time I installed my AMD i got it right.

It's much harder when you have to work in a tight case compartment.

As for the cpu shim - w/ or w/o the shim, your heatsink is up against the die. If it weren't up against the die, you'd have a fried mobo.

The reason my die was cracked was because of the insanely tight CPU clip and the fact my shim jumped up became misaligned (this shim has the special prongs, but it jumped up and out of alignment completel while I was fussing with the AX-7) It was my mistake, I'll admit to it. I'll still use the shim on my new CPU but with a little ASII to hold it down. I find that its just cheap insurance.

Now what do I get:
XP1600+ or XP1700+ ?

I'm not going to unlock it, I just want to run it at higher FSB (145 MHz).

Not really..... If shims were necessary, AMD would include and require their installation. As you found, shims can shift. If not manufactured properly, can be warped or not sit below the core. I remember reports of some of the copper versions shorting out the bridges on T-Birds.

Hey, it is your processor though.... I am just expressing my view. ;)

EDIT: I would go for the 1600+. They are well known for their overclockability. My KG7-R with good RAM and proper BIOS settings runs a 166 FSB easily. That is with a factory unlocked XP1800+ MP.

Hey no prob

except i'm using a shim that won't shift if properly installed, won't short out any bridges, and works as intended.

it has little prongs to align itself, and has cut-outs for all the bridges and stuff.

It won't budge once its aligned.

the problem with this situation was that it jumped up and got shifted DURING installation :(

I dunno, I might just leave that fuc*er off.

Get the XP1600 from newegg, OC fantastic (look at sig). From what I understand the shimed used the Tbirds, should not be used on the newer XPs, something about no contact made because the shims are made too high. I don't remember exactly.

But, I'd go with the Xp1600, I'm confident you'll get alot higher than 145FSB with it :D
