AMD announces HSA Foundation: AMD, ARM, Texas Instruments, Imagination and MediaTek

It's one way to keep AMD alive outside their GPU division.

Now they have to produce. All the buzzwords and hoopla are meaningless without a working product to show for it. Lets see what happens.

I don't even know how this would affect me in reality. Most of the stuff they talk about seems as if it would be behind the scenes and you wouldn't know or notice?
 
How about a laptop that uses an Arm core or two for light usage and when you need more power, a x86 CPU or a GPU wake up depending on which is better suited for the task at hand?

Thought about it from the software side?

And why use Arm cores when you can use faster x86 cores with the same power consumption.

MS made sure Windows RT will fail with the 85-90$ per device from OEMs. Not that OEMs wanted to make Windows RT tablets anyway.

But again, talk is cheap. 😉

I don't think that's the point here. The point is to be able to provide some connectivity between the architectures rather than just mix and match in order to replace one another. HSA foundation between AMD and ARM (Imagination Tech. is big as well) allows openCL to be spread across both x86 + ARM and on every imaginable platform.

I'm hoping Intel does join up, actually. I doubt they nor Apple will due to how it might limit their choices, but Apple will likely benefit from this the most due to their use of both x86 and ARM and how much they favor the visual aspect of computing (you need GPUs for this) and the fact that they were the biggest name to push openCL forward.

It's interesting. I'm not sure how or what it's meant to do exactly but if it means the HSA foundation pushes forward GPGPU computing then I'm all for it 🙂

As much as the traditional desktop folk despise the rise of on-die GPUs, it's hard to ignore the fact that this is the direction of modern computing :/

They wouldn't make a single step towards anything not x86. While we will see Imagination Tech's on-die GPUs take advantage of HSA GPGPU, there's no way in hell Intel is going to incorporate the same on the HDXXXX line or MIC. MIC is specifically being built around x86 (again).

I don't see anything in HSA which is ISA dependent, you?
 
No, in fact it's meant to bypass the ISA dependency. The issue with that is Intel can't control it. They rely on x86 and only sell x86 because it's proprietary and theirs and theirs alone (well... AMD is kinda there too) so anything that speeds up computing outside of x86, especially ARM, is a big no-no as far as Intel is concerned. Intel supporting HSA would be akin to shooting themselves in the foot.
 
Man intel is so screwed . All these companies ganging up on Intel . The IBM fad club proved when the The industry giants get together its over for intel . The powerhouse fabs proved to the world . When these giants get together they can topple anyone . Intels barely hang on to its Fabs . LOL. Intel/Apple own 49% of Imagination. The biggest player in that segment. Is AMD in the Fab club still ????? That went well.,

Ha intel has come out and said in an AT article they don't need anyone else. They said they could run cuda if they wanted to Intel thinks it can do it all . I sit here thinking . Is intel right in thinking They don't need these other companies and in so doing they as a corperation can keep all the research for Intel. Good thinking by them. Than I start thinking Big little cores . Than I look at Medfield better than the arm 9 and 22nm is up and coming early2013 . Than there is the fact intel said in yet another At article on haswell they can mix and match cores. So Reading this and all these companies knowing what intel has it makes perfect sense. For them to try and meet the Haswell generation or be left in Intels Smoking hot tech.'
No were will you see it written as fact . But I don't believe Haswell is X86 at all . I believe x86 on haswell will be run on software layer. Intel brings AVX1 followed up closely by AVX2. Is AVX x86 code after its been recompiled. Intel would need alot of cache to do this. They have . Need good vectorizing also. They got that with both Haswell and Kights Corner . Intel naming scheme on core SB/IVB.

What exactly is Intel Bridging , When Larrabee became Nights ferry . Than Knights Corner . Intel was crossing something and than turns the Corner. The other interesting aspects is spelling of knights rather than nights. We all know what knights are about.

No I think haswell is alot differant ,even tho thats not whats being said. Less than a year to own . Fall IDF for some exciting news on all fronts.

Both MIC (aka Knight's Corner) and Haswell are very much x86. Their first foray into x86 GPU computing didn't work out so well (I hear if you mention the L-word Intel hires a trained assassin to find you) but they're hoping this go around will fare far better. It might, too. They have already booked some sizable contracts so that's a good start.
 
I just Don't even understand why intels name is brought up . Weres the Apple THE NV . Ever name on that list needs something from names that are on the list. Not one fab on that list.
AMD likely will need something . Arm likely . Intel doesn't need to be in this group . Intel has great low power chips and great high power . Intels only weakness IGP. Haswell suppose to change that If its 3x faster than IVB it will . Intel is also dropping Imagination on some atom cpus and going with SB/IVB type IGP

OK I enjoy giving a good laugh . Heres another . I believe this is a safe bet. Intels 22 atom NON-Phone version will be as fast or faster than core1with way better feature set. Should be top dog in all things.
Than there is AT latest article of IVB in tablets. If Thats true Haswell would cover all thge portable class. That could leave 22nm atom for portable phone as its base usage.
Intel bringing IVB into the tablet is almost breathtaking in haswell posiabilities. and its has to be arm wrenching for the competion . Intel basicly saying to those who want to play . Heres the line. Ya want to live don't cross it . Its like Anand said this is really really big.

I don't see why people think Intel has yet to follow. Intel OpenCL is right here: AMD App.

Confused? Intel's CPU cores running OpenCL through AMD App can beat a GTX 680. Intel doesn't have to implement any computing API. They simply expose powerful vector instructions directly, so developers can use any programming language or framework they like.

AVX2 will double the throughput of the CPU cores, and adds parallel memory access support (gather) which replaces up to 18 legacy instructions. AMD is scared shitless about AVX2, since it offers the same throughput computing technology as a GPU, as a homogeneous solution that doesn't suffer from latency or bandwidth issues.

HSA is doomed to fail, and no alliance with other companies will save AMD from that.
