I have an intel 3.2c that i use as my main machine, with an x800pro, and it does what I need to well. I also have an AMD 64 3000+ with a 6800gt that has a pvr connected to it that i let run 24 hours a day to record all my shows. I also use it for gaming. They are both great chips, and both have their advantages. I have seen with HT enabled, the p4 does a little better with programs like premiere, but in general they do equally well.
I have a 2.4c sitting outside of a box, and i really liked that chip but replaced it with the AMD so i could use cool and quiet to let it run.
With all that info available, what would I buy next?
I would buy an AMD 64 for my next box. No sleight to intel, but the 939 offers just as much as intel machines, just need the price to come down a little. I trust my amd box to be on 24 hours a day, where my intel 3.2 seems to like to run warm.
I haven't read too much on the new intel chipsets to make me think going with a 915/925 is worth buying new video card, new memory and all for at this point.
But AMD 64 or pentium 4 (northwood) is where i'd go, and stay for the time being.
The 754 is at a good price point, and the 939 is slowly getting there.
