Well, Correct me if I'm wrong, and please comment, but it seems to me that with AM2, 939 will soon be obselete. Which means that if you're in the market for a HOT computer...wait a few months and prices will plumet on 939 stuff. Just like 754 is dead and socket A before that, soon will 939 follow.

depends on if you have money to burn or not. I personally don't have a cent to waste and have decided to get a 3200+ in stead of an opty because many will ditch their opty's within the year to grab an AM2

After a product comes out, you will need to wait another 6 months to a year for the product to mature, unless you want to be a beta tester. Then you hear about a new product coming out in 6 months to a year and you'll end up waiting once again. Then you find yourself at age 60 and still using a 286 16mhz, 1mb RAM, 40 mb hd, 14" EGA monitor, and a genius 2 button mouse still waiting to upgrade.

I agree.
I'm gonna wait until 2035 - when we move into quantum computers.
No sense wasting any money before then.

I think there's a vald point there...for buyers like me. I never buy new gen stuff, I always wait for stuff I like to be second gen, so the prices are much lower.

Good thought.

Hahaha...if everyone operated under your 'logic' then no one would ever upgrade. You do realize there's always something 'right around the corner', dont you? Why on earth did you even post this LOL.

There sure are a lot of socket 754 cpus and motherboards for sale, considering its dead. :p Its almost as if they're still making them.

Umm, no thanks. Already got a DC Opty. If I do decide to upgrade this year, it surely won't be a little incremental upgrade to AM2 (unless by some act of God, AMD manages to get 65nm out the door this year)...if I do upgrade, it's looking like Conroe at this point. :p (Would be the first time I've had an Intel chip in my machine since the P3 days...)

Why wait for AM2? Just wait for conroe. It'll Pwn all. Of course, you could wait for K9. OH but WAIT, K10 is coming after that. You better wait and not waste your money. OF course, if might be better to wait for K11, or DDR6, that would kill everything. Or perhaps you should wait for the quantum computer....

Exactly. Even if Conroe isn't 20 or 30% faster than X2 at comparable speeds but only as fast, Conroe is set to launch at 2.67GHz at $530, half the price of FX60.

Forget about Intel's benches and just make the reasonable assumption that Conroe and X2 will be competitive.

We're in for a nice price war, no doubt about it.

Screw waiting. Got my system already and I'm happy =). I'm glad I didn't upgrade until people worked out the kinks in regarding some of the dual core issue with games. Although, my WoW is still capped at 64fps......

If you are looking to get the top of the line, it's definately worth the wait.
However, I would think that s939 would be a better buy due the amount of motherboard and memory choices, and probably the better bang/buck factor in the next 6 months or so.

LOL.

Waiting has benefits in very few cases.

With computers, it's pretty impossible to completely plan for the future, since there's always something new around the corner.

You can't compare a $530 pricepoint of a processor in six months to the price a processor now! I definitely can't wait for Conroe and the next revision X2/AM2 processors at the end of the fall. Should be sweet.

Its just like anything else.

You can wait for it. Then it hits the market and youll have to take out a loan to afford it...

Or continue to wait for the AM3 to come out so your AM2 drops in price and is also "obsolete".

Guess just all depends on you budget, marital status, your current rig and what your needs are.

Myself, I waited until I was at the point where I COULDNT play the newest games, and ordered the best $2000 could buy ( which still isnt the absolute top of the line, that will cost you at least $4000 ).

As far as waiting for the AM2 because 939 will be "obsolete" .. I dont see it this way. Tons of people have or are still buying 939. And, its been one of AMDS finest offerings IMO. The first AMD chip I bought got outdated much faster than these.

X2 3800 - X2 4800 is an AWESOME buy right now. And I would say the direct opposite, and nows the time to do it :)

Is it just me or are games that are coming out have tougher and tougher sys requirements. Before, a bunch of hit games will be released and playable on a range of systems with about the same sys requirements. Now, it's like one or 2 hit games come out at a time, and the next few have a lot tougher requirements and continues that trend.

Yes you can when the current top of the line $1000 chip will be dethroned or at least seriously challenged. Have you noticed that the FX line of chips haven't really come down in price since they've been introduced? This is because there is no competition for them.

The prices will come down, just wait and see.

Only if you're buying a server or workstation. There's no point in it for home computers.

Yes I am buying it for a 3d/design workstation. Actually I had a quad opteron 280 workstation for 2 weeks last month but I returned it to the shop for full refund due to crap build quality+ hardware failure. Now I will be building it myself and can't decide if I should get Opteron 280/285 based system or wait for AM2. My current system is too slow.

I'm building my third Amd64 computer. I'm waiting for the X2 4800+ prices to come down. Right now, the speed of the A64s are what I'm comfortable with and unless you're a gamer, it doesn't make sense to look for anything more. Its your money.
I'm dreaming for a 24" Dell.
