Hi guys,

Im quite confuse with tis CPU Althon XP2600 @ FSB266mhz and XP2600 @FSB333mhz???
The XP2500 runs @ FSB333mhz = Barton 512L2
The XP2600 runs @ FSB333mhz = TBred 512L2
Since they are the same isnt the XP2600 also a Barton???

Am i wrong or confused? Pls correct me.
Thanks.

There are three versions of (desktop) 2600+'s:

  • Thoroughbred 2600+ with 266MHz bus and 256kb L2 cache (these are pretty rare)
  • Thoroughbred 2600+ with 333MHz bus and 256kb L2 cache
  • Barton 2600+ with 333MHz bus and 512kb L2 cache
Bigger picture: are you looking for a buying recommendation? If so, what motherboard do you have, and what speed is your RAM?

hi,

Now i know the XP2600 has so many flavors.
Thanks for making it clear to me.

I was thing of getting a Abit NF7-s Version 2.0. Is it ok?
I got a pair of twinmos PC 3200 256MB.
And 1 piece 512MB.
So im wondering how to put tis 3 piece into the motherboard to make it dual channel???

The NF7-S revision 2 has a good reputation as an overclocking board and you would probably want either the Barton 2600+ or one of the mobile Bartons if you plan to overclock. You can use all three sticks of RAM in whichever arrangement you like... pspada tested his two 256MB and single 512MB sticks in various arrangements and the performance ends up being almost precisely the same no matter which slots they're in (tested with UT2003 Demo Botmatch).

Do you have a decent power supply from a good manufacturer to go with this setup? :)

I have a HEC 435watts power supply.
Running:
Althon 1GH @ 1.2GH.
Asus A7V-133A.
512mb PC-133.
Inno 3d FX 5600 128MB.
Intel network card.
Realtek network card.
Sound Blaster live Card.
Last but not least Wins XP Pro.
Still manage to play Far Cry in medium to low setting. :)

Do you think i should upgrade now? Or should i wait till XP3000 price drop?

Upgrade NOW and get the NF7-S and the Barton 2500. Then crank it up to 3200+ at stock voltage (or close, I get 2126 mhz at 194 bus or something like that)

As soon as you can after that, get a new video card so you can enjoy Far Cry. That 5600 won;t do even with the new CPU, as it will hold you back. By then the next generation of video cards should be out, and you can get a 9800pro cheap.

sorry, just ignore the people who reccomended the desktop barton; the mobile is the way to go and you will not need to unlock it. unfortunately the desktop barton is impossible to unlock so if you want to run faster than 3200+ speeds with one you're SOL. my mobile 2500+ does 2500mhz at 1.80v just to give you an idea. it's comparable in speed to an athlon-fx 53 which is the top chip made by anyone right now.

Now I would like to see these benchmarks that put it near the FX-53...because I doubt that

Wat is the correct way of applying Thermal paste or Artic sliver on the heatsink/CPU core?
I saw pple from the hardware shop applying low grade thermal paste on the HSF and stick
it to the CPU.
I think it is better just to apply a little bit of atric sliver on the cpu core n spread it evenly instead
of making a big mess on the HSF. Or applying on both of them.
Wat do you think guys?
