Def. get an SSD, if this machine is going to last "forever". No need to hobble the machine with a HD. Crucial 128GB m4 drives are going for $140-150 on sale now, around the same price as a 1TB Caviar Black HD.

As always you have all given great answers and thank you.

I took all into account and spoke to the couple about how much space they want and they did want all that much so i went the SSD route. Also as so many mentioned the i3-2100 it got it as the 2500k would have been overkill for them even in a few years time also it is $30 less then the A8-3870 and put that towards an SSD (The cheapest 120/128GB drive i can get is $50 more then a 1TB WD black). Build was as followed.

i3-2100 $119
Asus P8H67-M LE $95
8GB 1600mhz vengence C9 $56
C400 128GB $196
Seasonic S12II 430W $79
BitFenix Shinobi mid-tower $67
BenQ G2025HD (1600x900) $99
Pioneer DVD drive $25

Total $736

The AMD would have been
A8-3870 $144 ($25 more)
Asus F1A75-M LE $100 ($5 more)

looking through bench the i3 does well and i mentioned that it will start to suck in the graphics department in a yeear or 2 and i could add a discreet GPU to speed up graphics related stuff (im paraphrasing here). I don't think they fulling understood after a lenghty explaination but i'll cross that bridge in a while i guess.

Just thought i'd post a final build so you can compare pricing/for anyone else looking at the same question.

Thanks again.

I just saw this post and I went through the same thing for my daughter. I think the flaw in your logic is you aimed a bit too high for the processor. I ended up on an A6-3650 which ended up being $150 less than the i3 for the total cost. Not that the A6 was a great processor, but the cost was much better than the Intel system.

Just a thought on that entry level stuff.
