Hi,

Looks like I can get hold of an AMD FX-60 chip. According to the AMD website, it runs at 2600MHz (I am assuming 200* 13) compared to my 2400MHz. I can also overclock mine to 2736MHz (228 * 12). The L2 cache is 512, mine is 1024.

The FX runs about 8.33% faster than mine at stock. Would I be able to get similar or better performance, as well as overclocking from the FX chip?

Any reason to not bother, or would it be a worthwhile upgrade?

Any comments would be appreciated.
 
dude, the results would be so negligible that it wouldnt even be noticeable: its 200mhz & same gen cpu. upgrade to a phenom2 & then u'll se some differences.
 
I still cannot believe what FX60's are going for on Ebay. For the price of one of those used, you can pretty much buy a brand new motherboard, faster CPU, and DDR2 memory.

I owned one.. 3ghz is about max with those

lol I know, I was going to upgrade to dual core on my 939 rig. also wanted to upgrade from 2gb of ram to 4gb. it was cheaper to sell everything and buy an am2 setup with ddr2 cost me almost nothing out of pocket when it was all set and done. just looked into it again, and will cost me something stupid like 75-80 bucks just for an old 3800 x2 to upgrade my HTPC, prolly going to do the same with that and just get a new AM2 setup
 
No, I'd start an Intel build or a Phenom II build with the money spent on the FX-60. The 4800+ is a great chip by itself and you simply won't get more bang for your buck.
 
Like someone already said, it all depends on how much it would cost you. If it is a friend willing to give it up for something negligible ($50), I'd consider it if only for the "collector" status.

Assuming its a decent FX60 you might be able to get 3000MHz out of it with decent cooling, but considering you claim to get 2736MHz out of your current chip that really isn't that significant of an upgrade at all. Don't do it if you actually want noticeable performance improvement.
 
fx60s are worth $250-300 or so on ebay.

and 4800+ x2 are worth nearly $200 as well..


i say you buy your friend schip.

and sell both.

and buy a phenom ii 920 and board... and hav emoney left over.
 
Your s939 4800+ version is actually very rare since it is 2.4ghz with 2x1MB of L2 cache instead of the more popular 2x 512MB L2 versions.

If your having to pay money for the fx60 I would not upgrade it since its only 2.6ghz.

Ocing would be better of course if you could get the fx60 to run at 3ghz. Thats about a 20% increase in clockspeed which isn't to shabby IMO. 🙂
