AMD 939 Price Drop?

I really need a dual core 939 chip to help me save money using my old parts in my sig. My 3200+ is just not cutting all the multitasking I want to do. I need AMD to drop the price of the Opteron 170 to 99.00. Should I send them an email?

You are dreaming. Opterons are server parts and have hit rock bottom price wise. Suck it up and find one used or pay retail price for it. BTW, I doubt your current PSU is going to cut it with a dual core processor, never mind overclocking an Opteron to its limit.

Why are you set on the Opty? I would think even an X2 3800+ would be an upgrade, especially if you overclocked it. I went from an A64 3400+ to an X2 4400+ and it was a very significant improvement in overall system responsiveness, multitasking, etc.

So why not score a 3800+ or 4200+ from the forums and overclock it?

If only 939's weren't dead.
Socket 939 prices don't suck compared to Core 2 Duo anyway.
Core 2 Duo = new CPU + new mobo + new RAM.
Upgrading your outdated 939 = new CPU.
Now unless the 939 CPU costs somewhere in the region of $200~$300 dollars more than the Core 2 Duo, there is no price/performance issue, a Socket 939 CPU is better price/performance than a Core 2 Duo for Socket 939 users.
Socket AM2 is already priced almost reasonable compared to Core 2 Duo (although Intel has the better chip)

I'm in the same situation. I just purchased a 3800 X2 from Newegg for $145. Hopefully this will tide me over until the DX-10 cards are released and I build a new system.

What is faster at stock the 3800 X2 or the Opty 165? I'm tired of overclocking and monitoring temps and stability crap. I just want to drop it in and run it at Default Bios. I won't even ajust my ram from 333 to the rated 400. Set it and forget it is what I want(939) that is...

The Opty 165 probably would be better due to its larger L2 cache.

Depends on the application. Games usually run faster with more cache, some other apps favor higher clockspeed.

I chose the X2 over the Opt, based on this review: http://techreport.com/reviews/2006q1/opteron-165-180/index.x?pg=1

As you can see the 3800 beats the 165 in almost every benchmark and every game at stock speeds.

I like my computer to run as cool as possible, so I will not overclock.

if you want duel core for cheap get a 3800 for about 100 bucks, if you don't want to OC there is not point to the opty really since from my experience faster stock speed chips can be had for cheaper the point behind the opty was good OC results

2GB memory will cost you $200+, a motherboard $100, a video card for gaming $200, etc. (well, even a decent after-market HSF for CPU will cost you $50)

How cheap do you want your CPU to be? $20? No offense but I think current 939 CPUs are already cheap enough.
