no overclocking.

this will be for a home server application. gf travels and needs access to files for her business. also i want to learn a bit about building a server, reading data over fixprotocol, and storing it to a database, may add mp3 or other sound files...

prices are about the same on new egg, give or take $5...

will be using ubuntu server edition, scilab, firebirdsql....

thanks in advance.

Thanks. I wish Toms was still updating.

If I am lucky, and I do a good job, the homeserver, will receive streaming FX prices 24 hours per day....but that wont be in the next couple of months. I have a lot to learn and have to write a Fixprotocol adapter. Did I mention, I don't know how to do that :)

I'd probably go with a Phenom 8450 over an X2 6000+ because it will consume less power and will be slightly faster in multi-threaded apps.

But as Philippart said, you'd do fine with a X2 4850e. With something that is going to be on all the time, power consumption is the important factor.
