AMD 8350 almost new with cooler on newegg for $65

That's a great deal Mark. That description has to be wrong. This is the retail package that includes the Wraith cpu cooler:

Honestly, after running Ryzen-based CPUs for the last couple of years, I bought and built a few FX-based rigs for S&G, performance of those BD-derived FX CPUs was a bit underwhelming. For the money (the key part), they're not bad, but like, for gaming, an overclocked Athlon 200GE for $49, is basically just as good as one of those FX CPUs with 8 "cores" (really 4 dual-threaded modules). Don't let AMD's marketing fool you.

Edit: The ONLY thing that I think makes BD-derived CPUs stand out, is their support for MANY optional instruction-code sets, some of which are NOT supported by Zen (at least the ones that are out today). So if you have some sort of really specialized application, that requires those instructions, then by all means, buy one, buy several. But for most of us, that would be a fairly unwise choice, unless you are on an extreme budget.

Edit: Sorry, I was only talking about building new.

If you have an existing rig that can take an FX-8350 as an upgrade, then HECK YEAH.

Useful chip for that one last upgrade to an older AM3+ rig. Recently replaced two FX-4130's with FX-8350's. Running them on full size ATX boards at 4400, 4500 turbo, with all energy saving features enabled. Go much higher and you are climbing up a wall, VCore and heat go way up. One was $33 used & another was a gift, leftover from upgrading a friend to a Ryzen.

Roughly speaking, it takes two of those "cores", a full module, to match an older I5 4690K core operating at the same clock speed. Wouldn't you know I am using them in LAN gaming rigs, but they do ok. We mostly play older games.
 
They are great for what they are.

However with Microcenter having the Ryzen 1600 at $80.( at least they were). Thats a no brainer for a new build.

Can we add an "FX-8350" to the thread title, pretty please? I keep seeing this thread, and reading "B350", and thinking it's an AM4 (current-gen AMD) motherboard deal. Pity my poor eyesight and my 4K monitor.
