AMD 7970 original. Is it still a good card for gaming?

i purchased an AMD 7970 when it launched in jan 2012 so its over 3 years old now..should i upgrade it? or is the 7970 still considered a good card for gaming? rest of rig is intel 3770k asus p8z77v-pro 512 gig crucial M4 ssd.

It is almost as fast as an AMD 280X so a mid range card by today's standards. What resolution are you playing at? As long as it is 1080p or lower and you don't go for absolute max detail and crazy AA settings, it is still good enough for most games. A mate of mine has a 3770K with a 7950 and he has no problems.

I have a 3770k. I had a 7970 at ghz speed. But upgrading to a 290 was a decent upgrade.

If you like AMD, and it seems you do, I say wait a little while. Your card can play anything right now, of course maybe you need to turn down settings a little but not a lot and new cards will come out in a few months. Also it's probably best to skip generations. Yes, a 290 or 290X will be better, but its probably better to wait a little and make a bigger jump. Then maybe you can go another 3 years with the next card.

Yeah, it's perfectly fine, and with about 2x the power of the ps4 and almost 3x the xbox one it probably will be for a long time.

dont read the other answers, u missed the most important info:

your monitor.

1080p 60hz - 7970 is ok
1080p 120hz - 7970 is not ok, but u can wait

above 1080p - change gpu to a gtx 980

4k - 7970 is trash




btw: i have 2 7970 ghz edition and i am using em right now

It should be fine for now. If you're going to upgrade it's worth waiting until both amd and nvidia have full fat dx12 cards.

You should be perfectly fine for a while yet. I'm still playing most games at okay settings with my slightly OC'd 6950 @2560*1440. Your card is significantly more powerful than that.

The above is only true if you insist on gaming at max settings. I run a 2560x1440 120Hz monitor on a single OC'd 7970 and get 90-120fps in most games I play, simply by disabling AA and dialing most settings back to high or medium

it's comparable to the current $200 cards, and much slower than the $300 ones...

normally new $200 cards are good enough for gaming, so it should be good for a while.

7970 is a good card, it leaves a lot of it's potential on the table. It's a great overclocker, you can get a respectable speed boost by overclocking it to 1100+ core.
