renethx- I think what their saying in that link is that MCP68 will be a new chipset, and it'll follow the naming convention that 61x0/430 just got renamed to.

So maybe, and this is just an example, an MCP68 board will be like 7400 or something like that.

chucky2, I agree. In the past example, there were three flavors in MCP61:
  • MCP61P (nForce 6100-430)
  • MCP61S (nForce 6100-405)
  • MCP61V (nForce 6100-400)
By alalogy, there may be several codenames MCP63x and the corresponding chipset names GeForce 7xxx/nForce 6xxa or nForce 7xxx-6xxa. This is just my guess.

MCP68 = 7050/430a, new chipset, blends the 6100/6150 chipsets together from a performance/video engine perspective, upgraded MCP, HDMI will be native on the chipset. Performance will be slightly better than current 6100/6150 boards along with improved video quality.

Gary,

I just read somewhere last night that MCP68 is limited to 720p...can you comment on if that's true or not?

If it is, seems like that'd rule MCP68 out right off the bat as a HTPC solution...

But shouldn't AMD really have focussed on putting in a DX10 ready IGP?Like the x700 pro doesn't even support SM 3.0(which isn't really necessary for an IGP since gaming isn't intended)
But once Nvidia releases their DX10 IGP's this will go down.
Also as chucky said, the present motherboards previewed are pretty weak.945P motherboards from intel are a better deal minus the HDMI.

A Dx10 IGP definately won't be able to handle any games that will have DirectX 10 support anytime in the forseeable future. At this point the only games that will be getting Dx10 patches will be the more demanding AAA titles. By the time that native DirectX 10 games come out any chipset being sold today will be long discontinued. They would be better off providing a faster Dx9 IGP solution that handles Aero and current moderate gaming well.

Cool, thanks for that link dmce!

Gary,

Do you know why all these first 690G boards - minus the Epox board I saw pictures of - don't have a Firewire port on them?

It seems like such a simple and low cost addition to make, yet that would really make these boards complete as far as features go...

...well that, and a eSATA port...

We will have three boards up on the 28th, which is the actual release date. ;) Although breaking the NDA would be nice, it could create issues in the near future with us getting our Barcelona samples on time. :D

The Asus board has Firewire also. Most of the manufacturers are trying to hit the $80 street price target for this platform and Firewire is one of the first things to get dropped. Most of the boards I have are including e-SATA, two boards are HDMI equipped also.

Interesting Gary, I can't wait for your review then...

...and I just read that link that Wirrunna posted, and I'd say I'm sort of disappointed in the performance of the onboard video.

What would be sort of cool - if possible - would be to take an R700 add-in card and run it, just to see what the performance difference is between that and the onboard solution.

Can't wait till the 28th...

Hey Gary, one other thing...

...is there anyway you could find out from AMD on whether the 690G is guaranteed to support the AM2+ CPU's that will be coming out?

That'd really be nice to know, as plunking down for 690G and then effectively having your upgrade path cut 4-5 months later would really suk...

Gary,
If you can comment in this. Are the BIOS's for the boards more mature with all this extra time getting to market?

Gary, do not break the NDA, its not worth getting a bad reputation.
It would be nice though if on the 28th you could have an article giving the specs of the boards that you have and an indication of when the complete "shootout" review will be published.

All four boards we received had BIOS updates as of Monday/Tuesday of this week. This along with some last minute Vista driver releases threw us into a frenzy of retesting starting about 9pm on Monday into this morning non-stop. I will publish a tech overview shortly, performance numbers will be up in a couple of days. We ran all benchmarks under Vista along with image quality results, our comparison also includes the G965.

Will the performance reviews consist of an overclocking test? The abit IT-90 HD is rumored to finally be a decent mATX OC board, and it is based of of this chipset. I've been dying to find out if they will.

Thanks

Im looking forward to the closer look at other boards as what ive read on the MSI K9AGM2 left me a little disappointed for my HTPC build. Not much was given away with regards to HD but it didnt look good, as your own tech overview backed up. Hopefuly driver updates will allow smooth 1080P.

I hope your reviews look at HD in detail. I hope i dont need to wait for MCP68

Thanks

I will have overclocking results on the Biostar board, received a new BIOS today, opens up all settings on the board, down DQS settings, looks like a LanParty BIOS now. The abit board has not been sent out for samples yet, expecting in a week or two. I had one board die on me today, trying to figure out why now before we publish.

The MSI K9AGM2-FIH is on ZipZoomFly's site now, listed in Backorder status...first listing I've seen for a 690G motherboard. It's currently at $89.99 USD, pretty good for an introductory price...

The MSI board should be going for $79 on the street, ASUS and Biostar will be around $89, and the abit around $85. I do not have pricing for the ECS board yet.
