AMD 64's

If you want 64-bit windows, you do need a special version, its only in beta though and I think you can get for free from MS. Arent too many apps though that are in 64bit code yet.
 
ok so if i buy a new cpu, mobo then im set with the windows i have, and won't need to drop another like 150, r u guys sure?

I am positive, since I have an original Windows XP Professional disc and it works fine. What you may want to do is go to the Operating Systems forum and find the guide to slipstreaming Service Packs into your original CD. This is what I do and it is excellent, cuts down on my updating quite a bit!

I think the original poster's question is whether WinXP "gold" will install on an Athlon64 (err, oops, I guess that's what you said already 🙂). Sure, after installing, he can and should update WinXP with Service Pack 2, either by going to Windows Update or by pre-downloading the whole thing and saving it on a CD. That will get the Enhanced Virus Protection going, gotta like that 😎

Burtie21, if you are not up-to-speed on keeping your fresh WinXP installation from getting worms, you might want to check my tips here, with the basic idea being that you don't take a fresh WinXP installation and plug it into a broadband connection without a firewall (hardware or software), or even dial up to your ISP either. If you need a firewall software, the free version of ZoneAlarm will get you started. You'll want to pick between ZoneAlarm or the WinXP SP2 firewall in the end.
 
it the link that mecBgon offered ok to use for single computers? I would like to have SP1 and SP2 on a disk for fast setup in the future but on that site, microsoft says not to use it for single computer installations. It should be pretty much the same though no? will we ever see a general download for SP2 or will it always come though automatic updates (which hasn't worked for me yet even though it is turned on).

It's the same but they don't want people downloading a ~230MB file for just one PC when you'll have a much smaller download if you update through Windows Update regularly and install SP2 from WU.

Most likely. Some people have been saying that Microsoft may allow you to trade an XP Pro license for an XP x64 license.
