AMD 6400 overheating

A Hitman

Junior Member
I cannot find the problem. I have an AMD 6400+ at 3.2ghz with a Xfx 8800GT Alphadog gpu and silverstone 500W psu. Lately when I play some games eg crysis my computer randomly turns off. I have noticed that my cpu temps reach around 63c under load which to my understanding is the max the cpu can handle.
This problem never used to happen untill around 2 weeks ago.

63c is fine as far as CPU's go, what about your graphics card? Check that it is not overheating. A randomly switching off computer could be a myriad of things, but most commonly it is Heat and component failure (usually the memory).

what's changed? has the cpu been in place for a while? look for dust in the hsf... 63c is hot for an am2... even a monster like the 6400... has your ambient gone up lately? 500w should be sufficient, what brand of psu? weak 500w could be getting hot...

my 6000@3.2@ stock voltage with the stock hsf hovers around 55c@full tilt... 77f ambient...

Hsf is clean. It seems to be getting hotter as it never used to reach 63. Its also strange because it is winter (new zealand).
I think I should get a new mobo as the one I have now is starting to get old.

*it just shut down again while browsing internet. All temps were low
I now think it may be my ram or mobo*

My friend had the same problem, PC turning off while gameing, he has a cheep PSU, he changed the PSU and the problem is gone,,

Look in to new psu before you buy another motherboard, thats just me...
also 8800GT takes some power out of your PSU, not includeing your other components HD. CDROM, ext.....

Thanks
