Ok so I'm about to build my a64 rig with the stock hsf (retail) and looking at it it doesn't have the thermal compound that athlons and semprons come with! Does this mean I gotta put off my build util I can find some thermal grease? Man this pisses me off. Also when I find some how do I apply the stuff and with what? I guess maybe I was spoiled but it sure was convenient just being able to pop the cpu in without havint to get messy.

Yea thats what I'm used to. Now with this socket 939 amd 64 there is no pad :disgust:
 
Maybe I'm wrong... is the pad just bigger now? Like the full square size of the processor ? And it's no longer covered with tape, only the whole bottom of the hsf is packed in plastic. Can anyone confirm this change? I couldn't find anything on it on the amd site- it seems a bit outdated.
 
get some artic silver 5!

How to apply it is to put about half the size of a Bee Bee and no more than that. Put the heatsink down twist it a couple degrees to make sure you have good contact. That will make the difference.

edit: if you must, use ceramique. as5 is capacative so it might fry stuff if you leak some on the pins.

Yes I can confirm. That is how it looks like now. And actually, I'm pretty impressed how well the original heatsink/fan + pad (which actually seem like grey grease which have been evenly put on by a machine) work. In a system I built recently, with Q-fan activated, the fan is really quiet and the CPU ran at around 39c. Only standard stuff...

Thanks much, Its in the new hsf seemed a little harder to install compared to the old ones. I hope I didn't mess anything up. Thanks again.
 
Don't bother replacing that HSF's pre-applied thermal grease--it's some nice Shin-Etsu that's about as good as AS5.
