AMD 64+ rig

Juno

Lifer
Ok, I'm thinking of building A64 rig but I'm too tight on my budget so I want to know if you guys can help me out. I'm thinking about taking out my GeIL 1gb of ram, all hard drives and fx5600 video card to my future A64 rig. The budget has to be less than $1000.

Maybe I can buy a 6800gt oc or other latest video card.

Antec 550w psu - $122
Asus k8n nf3 mobo - $84.50
I want a newcastle cpu processor -- 3200+ or 3400+ - $179 and $205 respectively
oh I definitely have to have a dvd burner, maybe a dual layer one's.
add video card if I have enough money in my budget.

Help me?

You know, I usually hate it when people nitpick over things being in the wrong forum. However in your case since you are asking more than a few computer suggestions - yeah, you really got the wrong forum.

Do people not realize there are other AnadTech forums outside of ATOT?

Not a good Idea to go socket 754 and nf3 now, since nf4 is out and 939 is the future. That and you can definetely get a good PCIe card for cheap. If your on a budget, get an x600 or a 6200. You can get one for less then 100$, or do it right and just get a 6600GT PCIe card

My list so far, I don't know if you guys would be satisfied with this.

Case: any but I just want to have a black one. I already have two silver ones.
Power supply: Antec 550w psu - $122
Motherboard: Asus a8n-sli deluxe - $199
Processor: 3200+ 939 for $179 or 3400+ 939 for $205
Video card: BFG 6800gt pci-e - $435

Total: $935 if I go with 3200+ and $961 if I go with 3400+. This price seems too much for me. Any suggestions to reduce the price? Change the motherboard to a cheaper and budget one?

1. Buy an NF4 board w/o SLI.
2. Get a cheaper PSU.
3. Wait for prices to drop on the 6800GTs.
4. Go with a 3000+.
5. ???
6. Profit!

It will save you $55 bucks over that Asus motherboard. You could also downgrade to a winchester 3000+ processor. All winchesters overclock to about the same level, so you can easily overclock the 3000+ to 3200+ speeds or further. I currently have my 3000+ at 2.4 ghz, with no prior overclocking experience. 🙂

Honest, I never overclocked any processors before so I don't know if I'm willing to take the risk. 🙁

Your PSU is simply too expensive for your needs!!
Try to find something under $70
and you do not need a $200 SLI mobo
I personally think that a $90 nf3 board is better because AGP 6800GT is cheaper for the same performance
a 90nm 3200+ might be a better value since you can easily overclock it to 3500+ speed.

blackinches has the dfi lanparty nf4, it runs great with the bfg 6800gt oc. blackinches would also recommend the dfi over the asus sli. don't forget you can mod the dfi nf4 to be sli. or if you want wait for the asus nf4 board it has a nicer layout than the dfi in blackinches' opinion, but its not uv reactive like the dfi. as for black cases check out the coolermaster centurion. the only bad thing about the centurion is the fact that it doesn't have a 120mm fan for the intake. also for the dvd burner the nec nd3520a is very nice and for $60 can't be beat. though blackinches is tempted to get the plextor slot burner when that comes out.

but if you did want to save money a nf3 250 socket 939 board still isn't a bad way to go, that way you'll save money on the board and vid card. assuming the next time you upgrade it'll be a whole new rig.

Yeah, I'm too tempted to buy the slot-loading dvd burner. Maybe I can wait for that one lol.

I found some hardware price for you:
EPoX "EP-9NDA3J" NVIDIA nForce3 ULTRA Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU -RETAIL $92.50
XFX nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT Video Card, 256MB GDDR3, 256-Bit, TV-Out/DVI, 8X AGP, Model "PVT40AUA" -RETAIL $375

AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 512KB L2 Cache, Socket 939 64-bit Processor - Retail $196

P.S. If you have to go PCI-E, x800xl might be a better value.

Which power supply can handle all functions at once? My antec 400w psu died so I'm using 500w from ultra to run xp2700+ rig.

well by the time he upgrades again, socket 939 will probably be obsolete as well....i think there was a thread about this near the top of the forum yesterday....754 isn't a bad idea, in a couple years both that and 939 will probably be out the door..

Are you running a a64 rig?

Case: Cooler Master Centurion - $79.99
Power supply: TT Silent PurePower 480W - $73.99
Motherboard: DFI Lanparty ut nf4 ultra-d - $144
Processor: 3200+ OEM 939 with newcastle core - $179
HSF: TT Venus - $34.99
Video card: BFG 6800gt pci-e - $435

I still think it's too much. Should I go with 3200+ retail instead OEM or go with Winchester core instead?
