Can someone confirm that Chief Value= Newegg?
Yes, without a doubt.

I don't understand this, why would Newegg run two sites and undercut their own prices?

they're usually the same when it comes down to it. if u see the price is different on one, the shipping will be different in the other.
Still doesn't explain why they would have two storefronts.

Newcastle is the older 130nm process (nm= nanometer)
Winchester is the newer 90nm process

Smaller=less wattage to power=less heat generated=better chance for an overclock. Its also cheaper for AMD to produce as its a smaller die size. More cores per wafer, etc etc.

Anyway, all 3200 A64's and lower 'should' be in only Winchester cores at this time. There are some Winchester 3500's and some Newcastles. Anything above 3500 is still the old die size.

As for this price cut fiasco, talk about playing with your consumers. Monarch had the 3200 at 169 on saturday, then raised it three times yesterday in speed bumps until its back where it started. I suppose they thought they could fool us? Bah. Now I am not so sure I want to upgrade anymore... Yea, right 🙂

Thanks, I will get a Winchester then when I build my unit in the next week!

I picked up a 3200 OEM Winchester from monarch on Sunday night for $169. Must have been a one day thing since they went back up a bit.

In another thread somebody asked chiefvalue if they were affiliates with newegg, the reply was "they are our competitor". It doesnt make much sense for newegg to open a store down the street.

Doesn't anyone remember that other storefront Newegg had a few years back? I can't remember the name... I think it was like 'NuTech' or somethin. They looked almost EXACTLY like Newegg... just a slightly different greenish color and a green logo. Whenever I would look up prices on Pricewatch for many things, Newegg and NuTech would be almost the 2 lowest prices that'd come up, with maybe a dollar difference. (Hmmmmmmm, Newegg with the lowest prices on Pricewatch... that WAS a long time ago.)

Anyway, I haven't seen that other storefront in quite a while so maybe they rehauled it and turned it into ChiefValue, trying to make it look even more different than Newegg. My guess why they do two storefronts is so more knowledgable shoppers who use price search engines and such will find lower prices most times from ChiefValue and buy from there. And then they can still keep the prices a lil higher at Newegg for all the people who just go straight to Newegg now that they have made a name for themselves and assume they are always getting the best prices on the net. They may even offer slightly better service/support at Newegg as well, but I've never had a problem with anything from ChiefValue so I wouldn't know for sure. The smooth and quick order and shipping processes from Newegg are there though, so if they have the lowest price on something I want, I order from them without hesitation.

I dont have the explanation but the fact is that both are the same.

In the first days of january I was looking for an Arctic cooling Freezer 64, it was for sale only in two stores newegg and chiefvalue, but they were back ordered, I used the "auto notification" option on both sites, also put it for a memory stick duo 512Mb (for my P910), and for the 3500+ 90nm.

Every time I got a IN STOCK notification for each product the emails arrived at the same time (minutes between them) from both stores. also if you check carefully most of the time the cheaper item on one of the stores doesnt have free shipping and the more expensive have free shipping making almost the same prices for both stores.

but well try for yourself the in stock notification trick and then you will know.

by the way I bought the 3500+ winchester at monarch for $252 in january 10-15 (dont remember the exact date) and freezer 64 from sidewindercomputers.com and the memory from www.bhphotovideo.com.

It´s a great processor have it running 24/7 at 2.61ghz with a giga of PC4400C25 Corsair, the freezer is also great, temps are 40-42c idle and 48-50C load, and not noise ET ALL! (now i have to change my noisy 6800Ultra).

Well, both are owned by ABS computer. I know b/c I used to work for Nyton which was a store front before. ABS is good at doing this.

edit: thanks OP 🙂

Like others said... maybe a 1-2% drop for the retail part? BFD

Good thinking. That's called as the BRAND EQUITY.
So many loyal customers including me will buy lots of stuff from newegg even though price is little bit higher than any other place.
Just my two cents.

I saw on CNet that the only significant drops were in the high end and the Opteron, with the 3800 939 dropping about one-third.

So no drops in the 3500's? I don't know if I should pick one up now at $274 (chiefvalue), or wait for a price drop if there will be one soon.

Yep. 🙂 So if Newegg is gonna lose a customer because their price is too high then they might as well lose that customer to themselves (ChiefValue). 😉 I think most people in these forums are here to save a few bucks though, so as long as the site is not completely shady they will choose the lower price over being 'loyal'. 😛 I know I do. 😎

Quick update: It's Wednesday and the rumors of an emminant price cut on AMD CPUs seem to have been overstated. Some of the high end processors dipped but the mid range prices remain constant. Currently the best price on a 3200+ Winchester is at ZipZoomFly for $195. Some apparent dips early in the week quickly went back up to previous prices. Maybe we will see some movement over the weekend as President's Day sales begin.
Edit: Ooops my bad sry... excited werent ya? 😉

Might want to update that to $195. For a moment I though you had found a price mistake.
