AMD 64... is it a good idea

You might want to check out the Gateway 7422GX at Best Buy. It has the Athlon64 3400+ at 2.2Ghz, 1GB of RAM a dual layer DVD burner, and basicallt everything else the comparible emachines, older Gateway has. That's the one I'm looking at.
