AMD 64 cooling problems

I just recently set up my computer with a AMD 64 3000+ (Venice), and it idles at around 29c, but when I play games it gets in the mid-50s. All I have is the stock heatsink/fan and a 120mm on the back of my case, not counting power supply and video card fans. Is this normal and/or safe for it to go to that high of a temperature? And according to the mobo monitor software that came with my mobo (MSI Cool 'n Quiet), the cpu fan runs at almost 3000 rpm at idle, but slows down to around 900 when gaming. The only other thing that I can think of is that when I was putting the heatsink on the cpu (I used the provided patch of thermal paste on the bottom of it) I placed it on the cpu and took it off about halfway before putting it back on. Any insight on this is greatly appreciated.

Edit: I have the rear built-in 120mm fan on my Sonata II case set on high, if that makes any difference.

Suppose to run at 3000 rpm when gaming. Open the case and see if the temp drops by more than 4C at the elevated temp. A large drop in temp is an indication of a poorly vented case.

I would also reapply the CPU cooler after cleaning the CPU and cooler. Make sure you use new thermal compound.

I just tried installing Motherboard Monitor 5 to see what kinda temps it would read. I chose the MSI K8N Neo Platinum cuz it didn't have the regular K8N Neo4 as an option, and when it started up it said my CPU was running at 127c (not fahrenheit!), and my MSI software said the same thing so it beeped at me, the mobo beeped at me and it did an emergency shutdown. I started it back up, deleted MBM5 and the Cool 'n Quiet's reading low/mid 30's for idle now. Should I go so far as to clean the stock thermal paste on, put on some arctic silver and get an intake fan for my Sonata II, or are mid-50s acceptable temps for a 3000+ Venice?

Well there are easier ways to test it...

First, turn off Cool and Quiet.

Second, install Prime95, a desktop torture test for your CPU. Run this while monitoring your temps through MBM5.

Arctic Silver would help a lot too.
