Just curious about how much faster a 64 can crunch a WU? My 2500+ is running about 2:40 per WU.
I have an old K6-2/500 that I am thinking about upgrading and considering another OC'd AXP or moving on to an A64.

my 3200+ 64 does a unit between 1:45 and 2:10 depending on angle range. about 11-13 units a day typically.

I have an A64 3000+ that is OCed a bit to put it closer to 3200+. Per SetiQueue I am averaging 1:54 per WU. I feel that a P4 3.2 Ghz will give you much better output. You should get over 20 WU/day with P4 w/HT while 12~13 WU/day will be your tops with the A64.

Anyone disagree with my finding?

i agree somewhat JW. i think more realistic expectations of the P4 3.2 should be between 18-20. your numbers are more or less pretty accurate. if you are looking specifically for seti crunching, a P4 HT is the way to go for sure.

Keep in mind though that Seti was never written to take advantage of the 64-bit extensions on AMDs CPU. Once they start writing versions that support the extensions (it's only a matter of time), it's entirely possible that AMD64 chips will run around the speed of P4 HT CPUs...

Basically, HT is faster now and is more proven. AMD64 has potential, but is a risk...

I vote AMD64! ;)

True ,but that would be for BOINC.

Btw I have an XP Mobile 2500 @2.54GHz:D ,181FSB.It does 0.4xx WUs in 2hrs with the fastest VHAR coming in at 1hr45mins.
That's with v3.03 CLI

I'm matching unforgivens Ath64 3200 ;)

Ath XP Mobile o/ced would be a good cheaper option but with no scope for further upgrades.
For raw SETI output P4 HTs rules ,but if you wanted to play games on it too :)Q) you'd be better off with an Ath 64.Naturally those last 2 options are much more expensive

By now for SETI classic, P4 with HT enable and running 2 threads rules. Hopefully later at BOINC with 64-bit extensions support will favour AMD64. :)

In seti classic getting a full meg of cache can really cranks up the performance. Happens to be that more intel CPU's have that much cache, along with hyperthreading and such.

Hmmm,... interesting. I did not intend to upgrade and use as a dedicated cruncher,.... just thinking about upgrading cause I want to and I wonder how much my K6 has left in it. The board is falling apart, the PS/2 mouse port came out with the mouse cord last month and I had to dig up a serial mouse out of my parts graveyard. So I was basically curious about the 64 crunching speed. I really had no interest in building a new Intel machine (I've been Intel free since I retired my 486DX33) but maybe I'll give it some thought and a little price shopping.
Oh, and I've pretty well migrated to Seti BOINC already.

Sounds like anything you get will be a welcome improvement. Both have their strong points and I'm sure you will be happy whichever way you decide to go.

Don't really have a budget, had been considering a totally intergrated MB (video, lan, sound etc.) pop in a chip, some mem, and fire it up. Now I'm thinking maybe I'll just build me a new main rig, bump mine down to the kid's game machine, make the old gamer my wife's internet machine, etc. etc. and retire the K6.

I actually have saved up for that very system. Plan on actually buying parts and getting it together sometime around 2013.

The wife has a 2.4 P4 800FSB it cranks out 12 a day.
My unlocked 2500+ running as a 3000+ 8 or 9 a day

Well, now,... no budget meaning I don't have to pinch pennies ;-) ie: If I can OC a 3500+ higher than a 3200+ I'm not going to worry about the extra $75, but on the other hand I'm not going to spend the cash for a FX-55 or P4EE. I need some kind of price / performance ratio.
