I might have to jump on this. Will I notice a huge speed jump from an AMD XP 3200+?

no

uhhh.. am i missing something.. yes he will, a huge difference at that

an a64 3500+ vs a XP 3200+

the on die memory controller alone would be a large performance improvement.

for web surfing not too much

... but seeing as you have a game traders site in your sig.. you will notice a huge diference in games so long as your not GPU limited.

my bad, i carelessly misread axp, i thot he was talkin about upgrading from an a64 3200+

anyways, its faster no doubt, but still not HUGE difference, just noticeably faster in most things

a huge difference IMO would be upgrading from a something slow, pentium II to like...pentium 4 or something, otherwise if ur system is already pretty peppy, its just a noticeable difference

That depends on what you call huge. According to this http://www.firingsquad.com/har...u_shootout/default.asp you seem to get about a 30% improvement from a XP3200+ to a A64 3500+. Of course, could be different in different games.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I think I'm going to try and wait a few more months before I make the switch to an AMD 64 CPU.

You think there is much of a noticeable difference from a AMD64 2800+ (Newcastle, 754) and a AMD64 3500+ (Winchester, 939)?

I was planning to upgrade my current 754 system to a Shuttle 939 System. (SN95G5 to be exact)

Newegg does a fair bit of advertising, I haven't seen too many other online retailers quite as aggressive with their marketing, so obviously that will add to their costs.

Actually, it depends on the video card I'm going to get. I'm not going SLI for now, though it is tempting. I just don't have the money. I'm investing about $800 and I should be able to get about $200 back from my old computer if I play my cards right (It's easily worth $200, IMHO). I'm barely able to do this, and I honestly shouldn't, but I'll be damned if I'm not going to have fun once in a while ;D

Like I said, it depends on my video card. If the x800XL comes through (kinda doubting it, after all I've read), it'll be a PCIe board. If it doesn't, AGP.

We'll see...

Just a pentium 2? Why not a 386 =P.

How does this overclock as compared to the 3200??

Is this worth the $50 more?

I see different prices for the same 3500+? Am I missing something? I assume the $251 is OEM and to get the 3 year warranty the retail should be bought at $269?

120843 AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K (939) $288.00
120467 AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K (939) (Retail Box-w-Fan) $269.00
120423 AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K 90nm (939) $251.00
120429 AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K 90nm (939) (Retail Box-w-Fan) (ETA 01/15) $329.00

What are the performance differences between the 3500+ Winchestoer core (90nm) vs. the 3500+ Newcastle core (130)?

Well the Winchester is latest in chip technology from AMD one large diference is the temperature of the Winchester is much cooler so when overclocked it seems to be more stable due to the cooler operating temperature. The performance levels are very similar I think the Winchester edges out the Newcastle by only a margin but the Winchester can be overclocked to a higher degree while still managing to run cooler and stable. The Winchester on average is about $20 more then the Newcastle worth it if you ask me.

Take a look at the Core, are they the same on all of these and are they all OEM or Retail?

Monarch is an official AMD launch partner. Back when AMD finally released dual processors, Monarch was among the first outlets you could order from.

I posted the updated price of monarch from 259 to 251 on the 3rd, guess nobody checks my lowly threads in the processor section :p

If you guys find any other deals pertaining to this proc, maybe add to my thread, thx

people check hot deals section for hot deals, not the cpu/overclocking section

you should start posting stuff you think are hot deals here instead of there.
