I'd love to get this combo with a MATX board because I have a Celeron system I can replace with this and it is in a mATX case.

If you aren't going to overclock it, it will be very close. The K8M800 object to overclocking, because the onboard graphics (even if you disable it) can't handle the increased bus speed and the board has no way of fixing the AGP/PCI bus at a proper speed.

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME??? HAS NEWEGG GONE INSANE??? Or should I draw an X under my neck and write place hook here 🙂

kidding, the gigabyte board should be pretty decent, probably

about the only thing I need to make a second box would be a case, motherboard, and processor... I have a spare sound card, PCI graphics card (hehe)... if I got a TV tuner, the deal could make for a damn good Media Center box. This sounds like a damn good deal for building a second box or a budget rig to me.

By the way... have the AMD x2 price drops occurred yet? As of this posting, I see the socket 939 x2 4400 for $250.

I think a 2x4 would work better. 😉

Snowglobes work best!

It used to run over $400 a month ago so I'd considered that the lowered price.

Will this cpu work with Vantec Tornado heatsink, that I use with my current Barton 2500+? Also, since NF3 no longer offers the Soundstorm NF2 offered, what's a good budget PCI card I can use that offers 5.1 and at least as good as the old Soundstorm, one that will bring out the quality of my Klipsch speakers?

Thank you all for your patience and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just ordered the Biostar combo. I was thinking of pairing it with a 1 gig stick of G.SKILL Extreme Series 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM. Anyone have any comments (or suggestions)? I read a recommendation for that RAM with this combo in another forum yesterday. I thought that it might be better to go with a 1 gig stick in case I ever want to go to 2 gigs someday.

Thanks.

I'm using the Biostar + sempron 3100 "paris" @ 2.069 Ghz for a year now. It works like a charm...then I replaced my good ol' pqi 2 x 512mb DDR 400 value sticks (OC @ 230 mhz 1:1) with Mushkins XP4000 2 x 1 Gb DDR 500 (@ 230 mhz). Load times are much faster 🙂

Well the audio chipset is a ALC655, which should be decent. Furthermore, the drivers are constantly being updated as realtek is one of the few companies out there that loves working on the drivers.

The soundstorm was an excellent onboard audio, the best I've found. It has dolby digital live, which is an excellent feature and hard to come by. I ordered an Auzentech Xmystique and it has gotten good reviews. I'm waiting on my cpu/mobo to arrive to test it out. I use logitech z-680 speakers, which sounded great on my old nf7s w/ soundstorm.

Damn any decent sound cards are around 70 bucks. I was considering the Turtle Beach Montego DDL as well. But both of them has the 7.1 I don't need. Are there any good budget cards around 30 bucks that has good sound quality for 4.1 or 5.1 speaker sets?

Also, If I'm about to spend 70 bucks anyway, will this deal be better than the AuzenTech?

BTW, one answered whether the Vantec Tornado (80mm) will work with the 3400+ Sempron 😉

Thanks all for your useful input

That is a really good price on the zs platinum. I had an Audigy zs with my old nf7s, and I preffered the nf2 soundstorm over the zs. I think the audigy sounded great, but I didn't notice a difference over the nvidia soundstorm. I don't know of any soundcard other than the Auzentech or the Turtle Beach Montego DDL (and the onboard nvidia soundstorm with Nforce2) that will utilize dolby digital live. DDL turns all of your games into surround sound, otherwise, if you dont have a dolby digital (or DTS) game, you will get 2 channel sound played over 4 speakers with no sound from the center channel (that is when playing through a digital connection).

If you can live without DDL (I cant 😀) then you might check out some turtle beach cards, they are very good performers for a decent price. The Chaintech AV-710 is very cheap and uses the Envy24 chipset, it's also supposed to be a spectacular card 🙂

And a final note, nearly all soundcards made today will support 7.1, they are all backwards compatible with 5.1 (that ZS you linked to is a 7.1 card also) So it wouldn't hurt to have 7.1 capabilities if you ever decide to buy into it.

Wow that is a really great find, I'm going to post this up in the hot deals forum if you don't mind, I'll send credits your way. We could continue the discussion over there if you wish, so not to (further) jack the thread. 😱

You know, I thought about it and then I realized that in terms of performance per dollar, the E6600 is probably very similar to this.

It's probably just about 3x as fast. Two cores, each capable of being that much faster is about 3x as fast, and it costs about 3x as much.

Oh well, I'd buy this except I already own an Athlon 3400+ S754 system and I haven't really been particularly impressed.

The sockets (462 vs 754) use entirely different mounting systems, and are of completely different dimensions, if that is what you are asking I don't know anything about the Vantec Tornado.

Price changes took effect 7/24/06, which, incidentally, is the same day AMD announced they were acquiring ATI, which is also the day after which Conroe was originally expected to be released as originally planned by AMD to undercut Intel.

Can anyone recommend a cheap heatsink+fan to go along with this bundle?

For overclocking?

Provantage has the Freezer64 Pro for $21 shipped. The stock AMD quad-heatpipe can be found for around $15-$19 shipped as well.

Just totally remembered that the Vantec Tornado was the fan, and that my heatsink is a Thermalright SLK-800. Is there a good page to look at heatsink and socket compatibility as well as performace?

Wow there's a big diminishing return on the heatsinks 😛 Just ordered the Freezer64 Pro and some Arctic Silver with free shipping and no tax from SVC. Hopefully everything including my video card will all arrive around the same time.

GAH! I cant use my PCi 6200 with the GA-K8VM800M!!!

The board won't let me disable onboard video...this could be...problematic. :/

Anyone use one of these with a PCI video card?

Yeah, for some reason gigabyte hid it under the 'advanced' hidden menu options - the ones they don't mention in the manual. I have another gigabyte board so ended up trying that and it worked.

Kind of weird for a option thats not really a 'power tweak'

I just got my motherboard today, and either planning to keep the onboard Realtek audio, or buy a sound card.

Just a few questions before I do though, and any input would be greatly appreciated 🙂

1. Will the DDL from the cards above mentioned (Soundstorm, Montego, Auzentech) work well with a 4.1 analog setup, I read it's mostly only used for Digital 5.1 connections where non-true-5.1 inputs are only converted to 2 front channel outputs. I've actually never used the DDL option for the Soundstorm (the 5.1 DDL option under speaker selections) and never had the problem where games/music is only played on the front 2 speakers.

2. How will the Chaintech (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829120103) fair against the Realtek onboard audio chip in terms of sound quality. Also, how does it compare to Soundstorm in a non-DDL setup. How often they update their drivers?

3. Would I be better off buying an old sound card without the current fancy features (like 7.1, DDL, etc) but with a better sound quality, rather than buying one of these current ones?

Thanks all in advance! 🙂
