AMD 64 3200+ (939) - Getting Crazy Temps

Okay, there's got to be something up with MSI's temperature reporting because I have an average temperature of 40 degrees Celsius at idle. But for some reason, on Cool'n'Quiet (1.7.2.0), when I run Prime95 torture test, it rapidly jumps from 40 to 45 to 50 to 55 to 65, all in the matter of 5 seconds and as soon as a shut off Prime 95 it IMMEDIATELY goes back down to 40 degrees C.

What is up with that? Anybody got a solution?

Also, I want to post this in here instead of starting a new thread ... but I am having pretty bad stability issues only when the cpu is being stress tesed. I can't even go more than a few minutes in Prime95 and only about 8 iterations (out of 22) in SuperPi's 8MB calculation.

My settings are as follows ...
HTT: 3x
FSB: 240
Mult: 10
VCore: 1.55 + 3.3%
VDimm: 2.80v
Memory: Running 1:1
Timings: 2.5-3-3-10

Any suggestions guys? :(

I would try using a memory divider such as the 166 one. My motherboard can't seem to handle 1:1. I have the same cpu / motherboard / ram.

After you set the divider, what did you put for your timings? I'll be running at around 200 on my ram then ... so could I do 2-2-2-5 again? Sorry -- timing n00b.

If you can do 2-2-2-5 on your ram at 200MHz when CPU is 2.0GHz (200x10), then it will be no problem to do the same 2-2-2-5 after you set the divider. If you set 2-2-2-10 with RAS Precharge = 10T you will get better performance. Don't forget to reduce your VDimm to 2.6-2.7v if your ram is run at 200MHz.

Maybe reduce CPU to 2.2GHz and run ram at 1:1, VDimm 2.7v, 2.5-3-3-10 will help to ease your heat issue. :)

Agreed...If naything look at corecenter and speedfan and see what the diff is....

Also the stability is clearly your ram and ram timings...When ocing a chip you need to take ram out of the question until you find out the cpus true limit...I would run 133divers at 280 cause 166divider or 5?6 is still near 470ddr not 400...133divider or 3:2 would be at 187mhz or 374ddr....

defintely set the cas timings to 2.5,4,4,10 but leave 1t for now....

for example, I switched bios and changed 20C on Chaintech vnf3-250. I'm at 62C on water and the WB is room temp to the touch.

I have had two exact same Abit mobos with same bios sitting in the same room and they read 15C off from one another with same chip and speed and same HS installed.

Did a bit of research. Found out that ram slots 3 and 4 apparently aren't the best choices to pop your ram in on this board. Switched over to slots 1 and 2. Set FSB down to 235 and running 1:1 w/ 2.5-3-3-10 at 1T. Passed all the SuperPI tests. My prior setup w/ ram in slots 3 and 4 wouldnt even pass the 4MB test at an FSB of 220. Max temp using SpeedFan is showing 61 at full load and 29 at idle.
