AMD 3700+ San Diego running WAY HOT!

Just got a phone call from the wife and she told me that, yet again, whenever she plays WoW, the game keeps crashing and rebooting my custom made computer. Now, keep in mind that it ONLY seems to happen when she plays WoW, not when I'm playing, say, Oblivion, which is very graphics intensive.

I asked her what the temp. reading was when it rebooted and she told me 114 degrees Celcius. That would be why it's shutting down I'm assuming?

Stock cooling and heatsink. Thoughts? Ideas? Help? Please?

eta: 2 more things: the heat sink was incredibly difficult going on originally, but it finally did, after almost an hour of fighting with it. Secondly, it normally runs at @ 44 degrees when doing minor things such as surfing the net etc. etc. I have not confirmed the temp. as I am at work, but just in case. TIA.

It can't be that hot, 114C would be total meltdown for that thing. At any rate, it does sound like heat issues, and since you said you had trouble installing the HS I would check that first. It might be wise to invest in a better cooler, the stock ones are OK, but not the best.

The 114 was crazy I thought too. I'll check it out when I get home tonight and regardless, I plan on spending the few extra bucks and getting an after market one.

It's not going to melt at 114C but that is very hot.

Re-seat the heatsink, or maybe take the opportunity to invest in a better third party solution.

My two dollars is on the HSF not being seated properly. The stock AMD heatsinks that use a springy metal bar (or bars) through the heatsink for tension are almost criminally easy to install in about 5 seconds. The ones that use a plastic cam underneath a metal bar are the difficult ones to install, but those should be installable in under a minute without a huge amount of force (and I'm not a body builder or anything). These difficult ones still are installable in a reasonable amount of time, but if it took too long and too much force, then there's something that's making it not sit flat against the CPU's IHS.

Besides reinstalling the retail HSF, if you choose an aftermarket unit you should look for one that is easy to install. Too many of the aftermarket HSFs take a bit of assembly to install, and many of them require the motherboard to be removed for install.

Consider the linked cooler. It does a better job than stock (assuming both installed correctly), is quieter, won't break the bank like some other aftermarket units and supposedly is super duper really easy to install.

My 3500+ is running at 38C/100F at this moment. I have a stock HSF on it. My CPU will get up to 44C/111F at load, but that's max. It runs AOK.

My old P4 used to run at 55C/131F and I thought that was normal.

Thanks for all the responses.

I got home and yes, it was Farenheit (sp?). So it's running at what I have come to know as its normal operating temps.

It boils down to being a WoW issue. It's really odd too, because I uninstalled the game, re-installed it and it got to 61% D/L the patches, and it crashes again. And it's repeatable. So it obviously has something to do with WoW...ideas?

Check out their tech forum.

Dual core or single core? WoW might have some issues, Hitman did.

I dont hink it is a dual core for a 3700+ but you never know, run an adaware program, and or antivirus, there could be a problem there. If none of that works try a system restore, or reinstall windows. I hope i helped you.
