Right now I have a AMD Athlon XP barton 2800+ 333MHZ FSB CPU, Asus A7NX-E Deluxe MOBO, 1GB PC3200 RAM and a nvidia Ti-4600 128MB video card (my wife is getting me a new 6800 ultra for Christmas)

My question is would I see much of a difference if I upgraded the CPU to a XP 3000+ 400MHZ FSB? I use my computer for playing games. I'm going to wait to upgrade to a 64 bit CPU right now so that is not an option. I don't OC as I don't want to screw anything up, a couple of years ago I tried to OC my video card and I fried it. So I'm definitely gun shy when it comes to OCing. Thanks.

Nah, you won't notice any difference. But, for not much more than an XP 3000+, you can get an A64 2800+. That might yield some noticeable 32bit performance for you.

I agree, you won't see much difference. Maybe in synthetic benchmarks you will, but not in much else...

You'll see more of a gaming improvement with the new 6800 you are getting for xmas. :)

Okay, thanks for the help. Instead of buying that new mobo a few weeks ago I should have upgraded to the 64 bit CPU and mobo, oh well, at least the new video card will be nice :)

I know you said you dont like to OC but you reall need to with that system. The odds are that you did not fry your Video Card by OCing.

We will guide you through it if you want. Teh AXP chips are really only very good if you OC it nowadays.

1. Bump the VCORE but to 1.7V
2. Lock the AGP/PCI bus at 66/33mhz
3. Then increase your FSB to 200mhz (200x2)
4. Lower Multiplier to 10x or if chip is locked just leave it.
5. Try to boot if it doesn't increase Vcore a little. I have that exact same board and a 2500+ Retail version, overclocks to 400mhz FSB with 1.675V.

Youll be FINE the first step to OCing is having some confidence in yourself.

You should notice a Modest improvment nothing too dramatic. YOu are getting a 6800U so i would definately OC while you wait to get your A64. Even OCed you are going to be CPU bound though. SO just OC and wait it out.

thanks phreek, I might give that a shot, first though I have to get a new HSF. The one I have right now isn't that great, adequate but probably not for OCing. Thanks.
