What's the best stable overclock you can get from the amd64 3200+ winchester (s939), on air cooling. I use an Arctic-Cooling Freezer 64 heatsink/fan. Best I have gotten stable is only 2.35ghz with a .1V boost in vcore. I would like to get my cpu running at 2.4-2.5ghz, but not sure of how to step the voltage to get it to run stabley at this speed. Should I change the multiplier to 9x and step up the fsb? I have 2 sticks of Corsair pc3200 400mhz Value Select with copper heatspreaders on each. I have great air circulation in my Antec case also.

sounds like your setup is much like mine
check my parts for particulars, what mobo are you using? that will limit how far you push the FSB

I am running:
305x8=2440
Corsair VS2.5 RAM on 150 divider=222mhz 2.5,3,3,6 1T
Vcore 1.614v
VRAM 2.85v
chipset voltage 1.80v
stock HSF

sounds like you need to apply a memory divider because your RAM will only do~227-230mhz at stock timings and probably tops out around 240-250 with extra voltage, loose timings, heatspreaders.

most NF4 boards get their best OC on a 9x divider. If you can exceed 300FSB, try 8x.

to get my Winnie 3200+ to its max speed (~2.62ghz), it needs about 1.70v+, far too hot for aircooling.

be aware that most Winnies top out anywhere from 2.3ghz-2.6ghz. May just be the chip. I'm getting ready to sell mine off and buy a 3000+ Venice E3.

wait, so your Vcore is at what exactly? needs to be at least 1.55v and w/your cooler you should have no problem with 1.60v-1.65v range. try higher Vcore and keep an eye on temps

well the default voltage is 1.4v, and I run mine at 1.5v with 10x multiplier and 235mhz fsb to get me 2350mhz. Its completely stable playing counter-strike source. But when I get into those huge firefights I want an extra 5-10fps, so I'd like to overclock it just a little more.

I have an Abit AN8 motherboard. The Guru feature allows me to set the temperature warnings and at what temp to shutdown. I have it set to 60C for my cpu before it shuts down.

What timing should I change my memory to? I have 2 sticks of Corsair 1gb Value Select Memory, VS1GB400C3, with timings of 3-3-3-8. I would like to set my fsb to 275-280, with a 9x multiplier, giving me 2475-2520mhz, which is what I want. So you suggest a vcore of 2.7v?

no, set Vcore to at least 1.55v-1.60v. set VRAM to highest value. bump chipset voltage up to 1.65v or so and make darn sure CPU Spread Spectrum is disabled

Winchesters need AT LEAST 1.55v to get near their top end, you aren't going to find very many that will run >2.3ghz with anything less than that and many require more like 1.60v+ to get above 2.4ghz.

with heatspreaders, just set VRAM to max setting, probably 2.85-2.9v or so.
you are much, much better off using tighter timings of ~2.5,3,3,7 1T and a divider to keep the RAM under 230mhz. A big part of the problem I can see already is that Corsair VS will NOT run stable at 3,3,3,8 over 250mhz. It will be a miracle if you can get that RAM stable anything outside of 2.5,3,3,6-2.5,4,3,8. use memtest86+ to see if your RAM is even stable at those speeds, I seriously doubt it. ValueSelect isn't very flexible RAM. You are not going to be able to run it 1:1 and get over 2.4ghz.

the AN8 will do almost 400FSB. Extra FSB=faster framerates. I would shoot for an 8x multi and somewhere near 300FSB when all is said and done, though for the time being, continue on with 9x multi until you find the CPUs top end.
i.e. you will get better performance with 300x8 than 267x9

for the time being, use 133mhz RAM divider and see how far you get

I have my Winchester 3200+ @ 10x250 (running 166 dividier for 208mhz memory) @ 1.5v (1.45 actual since my mobo undervolts).

my highest overclock was 285x10 at 1.55v its prime stable for 90 mins. thats not bad. im really lucky though. this is with an asus a8v deluxe. right now, im running 2.7ghz at 1.55v prime stable for 24 hours. temps with xp90 are 30 idle 40 load.

that is absolutely OUT OF THIS WORLD for a Winnie on air.

very atypical. many of these top out at 2.35-2.5ghz.

thanks for examples of exceptions, but I am trying to point out what many Winnie owners run into, not what a handful of unusually good chips do

2.7ghz wow, and whatmeworry, newcastle = 1 generation older than the winchester, it is based on the old 130nm chip design(bigger core = more power, more heat, usually less overclocking potential)
