OK, Today went well, except I hurt like crazy when I go to the bathroom.

The good news, is that all the parts except the CPU and the custom water are in, so the build is proceeding. Very slow due to how I feel, but it is progressing.
And the CPU is in town for delivery tomorrow !

Zenith BIOS updated to 1402 (Threadripper2 version) just now.
Out with 1950, in with 2990WX!

I've got a Watercool full copper block that I'm going to put on this 2990WX. I also have a still NIB Enermax TR4 360 that I was thinking of putting on the 2990 just to see what kind of temps it gets but I should just send it back to the mfr as these things don't last but a few months before springing leaks apparently. And this 2990 really needs a real cooling solution.

Good luck, Mark. I've had stones before and can tell you all about how that feels! It's not fun, take it easy.
At least you have something you really want to do while recovering otherwise you'd be bored to death!

OK, wow, this MSI motherboard has monster heat sinks on the VRMs. Makes the motherboard very heavy. I hope everything work well today.

So, I tried to get a picture of the massive VRM heatsinks, not sure how good it is. They are as high on the topside as 4 packages of memory !

And the case is ready for the motherboard !

I am hearing great things about the VRM's performance on power delivery and subsequent CPU clock speeds on the MSI mobo. Good choice

While waiting for all my custom water parts to arrive, Here is the best currently available regular HSF (Noctura U14 TR4) and the best AIO currently available (Enermax 360 TR4) all ready for the CPU for stock testing. I doubt I can OC anything without the custom water setup.

Those ram clusters are so T H I C C.
I Like the coloring of it all. Mobo/case/fans have a glacier sort of feel offset by those blocks of lava (RAM).
Thank you very much for providing CPU box pics Mark and build pics. Seems MSI did good spacing too on that first pcie slot. Noctua should fit snug. If not, it has some offset settings to slide it up and away from that slot. X399 Taichi mobo is perfect though.. I didn't have to do any adjustments and have a 1080 in Slot #1. I can fit a credit card in between the backplate of the GPU and the rubber fan grommets on the Noctua on x399 taichi. That's enough for me. 250 Watts is about what I hit on OC'd 1950x @ 3.7 in prime95 and other workloads. Max temps were high 60s*C in a 78*F room. So, stock 2990wx should be about max the Noctua can comfortably handle.

OK, update. Even at 2133 mhz, I can't get the windows flash drive to load. It STARTS to load, then reboots. I am flashing the bios to a new version released 8/13/2018, maybe that will fix it. Also, I don't think it will run above 3200 memory speed. I have to get some of this stuff working before I even try that.

Note: These USB drives have recently been flashed with the latest version of win 10, and I know they work perfectly.

Would a 1 terrabyte NVME drive be a problem ? This is the first time I have used MSI BIOS or a NVME drive that large. Its the samsung 970 pro.

Drive isn't a problem Mark.
My Zenith won't post with memory higher than DDR4-2400. I have eight 16GB sticks of Corsair Vengeance DDR2666 that will run at 2666 15-15-15-15-35-1T perfectly fine. I haven't touched volts or had time to do anything TBH.

I did ratchet the multiplier up to 40X and it's running at 4GHz. Let it rip (sorry for the pun) on RealBench stress test for about 10 min. Plenty of result hash match (passes) but I'm not sure about the VRM. I have a 120mm fan blowing on it and the heatsink feels warm but I touched the edge of the board and it's HOT! That's to be expected with all four cores running heavy load at 4GHz. CPU isn't even breaking sweat at 42C. Yep, you read that right! German engineering FTW.

I will get some pics uploaded. Got to get this webserver here working.

You will absolutely NEED the latest BIOS to support threadripper2!

WOW, first test. 65c@100% load with the Noctura air cooler. But I think there is a lot of throttling going on. Notice the 99% of the 250 watt. And if you watch it, the CPU% changes a lot and the %of 250 watt keeps changing. but it WILL keep it under 70c at stock. That amazes me.

I flashed with my 2990WX, I guess that good. But do you know how to turn off the 250 watt limit ? Is it a bios thing ? I hate this MSI BIOS.

Yes, but I want the CPU to not throttle, and I think it is to keep under the 250 based on what I am seeing, and I want to turn that off in bios, and then if it gets hotter, but the 3260 Entermax in. Also, right now its taking 320 watts at the wall with the 1080TI. BUT, every do often it drops to 150 watts, this is throttling.

How do I turn that off ?

Not sure about power limit and target setting in BIOS. I haven't used a MSI board since x99 so not too familiar with that BIOS.
