Amd 2400+ basic overheating problem? no O/C, no modification

I don't know anything about overclocking and therefor not much about heat management.

I'm running an Amd 2400+ processor (boxed) with original fan.
-Albatron via KX400-8x and
-Xtasy 9600Xt video card.
-Antec Sonata with one 120m case fan.

I don't care to make it faster, the default 2Ghz is good enough for me and my games, however my CPU warning annoying beeping sound keeps coming on. You can choose where to set the warning temperature and currenty it's at 63C, with a max at 70C.

Is this too hot, or is this normal? Should I just max it to 70?
I don't want to buy another CPU fan if I can avoid it, Is this the quickest way?
Whats a good health temp for my CPU to run at?
Shouldn't this be covered under the three year warranty since I use their fan? Whats people's luck for getting AMD to help out with this?
Whats a good way to see some of those system stats (windows program) without rebooting in to Dos Setup.

I'd appreciate any help.

I would definitely say you are running too hot. I had the same retail setup and probably ran at about 40C at idle. Something you may want to try is getting a tube of Arctic Silver 5 and reapplying it to the heatsink. The stock heatsink compound isn't very good. SVC always has a good deal on AS5 at 5.99 shipped per tube. If you aren't overclocking you shouldn't need a new heatsink, but I would probably suspect heat transfer to your heatsink is an issue.

Oh, as far a software to check out temps and such, check out Motherboard Monitor. Definitely one of the best 3rd party wares for that type of thing.

Hope that helps!

Bo

EDIT: Fixed SVC link to point directly to their AS5

Thanks for the info. Yeah, i forgot to add that I used some cheap radio shack heat sink compound when it was rubbed off. I didn't know it made a difference.

I'll try the Artic Silver. I also suspect that the heat inside my case is too hot but will only know after I get MBM running.

Should I rub off the old compound before putting the new one on?

I got motherboard monitor to run. In Dashboard it says
Case 33 C
Cpu Diode 66 C (in Red)
Cpu Socket 55C

Core 0 1.63 V
Core 1 0.08 V (in red)

Fan 1 3750 RPM (slightly in red)

What is the difference between Cpu Diode and Cpu Socket?
Is it ok to have Core 1 with a low voltage?
Is that fan speed normal? How could I increase it?
Is there any other things this data should tell me as a newbie.

Any response would be appreciated.
Thanks

diode is in cpu
socket is under on the m/b
u cannot increase past max fan speed
does ur case have one or two 120mm? maybe u should add the second one. doesn't make sense ur running hot with what u list, since they seem to be quality components, amds cooler generally does 50's. when u put on paste, u gotta use a razor blade to make sure its even.. and very thin.

and dust your case.

that being said, if it doesn't crash who cares, its already worth next to nothing. when it dies, it will be worht nothing.

I put in a better heating compound and bought a CoolerMaster XdreamII for $16 at Frys. Now it runs at 35 C as per Motherboard monitor. (Cpu Diode at 44C). Much quiter too, man boxed fans suck.

Thanks for your help.

all my experences with retail heatsinks is that they perform badly .
