AMD's Radeon HD 6000 series was codenamed Northern Islands, it's succeeded by the Radeon HD 7000 "Southern Islands" and in 2013 we can expect the first Radeon HD 8000 parts, which are named after "Sea Islands". The Radeon HD 8870 and Radeon HD 8850 for instance are reportedly based on the 28nm Oland GPUs, a reference to Sweden's second largest island.

These chips will target the performance of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680, and will remain without real competitor until NVIDIA's Maxwell GPU hits the scene.

I'm tied to Southern Island/Kepler until the successor to Maxwell/Sea Islands. Hopefully by then whatever is out has a cooler name and is 100%+ faster than my HD 7970/GTX 680 :D

don't freak out too much, they're merely targeting current nVidia level performance with their own small chip

saying it will be without competition is pretty extreme sensationalism when all nVidia would have to do to counter would be to reduce prices of their own, already small GK104 chip, in order to match price/performance. Something that would be likely to happen anyway once GK110 hits. The real question is going to be whether or not the 8900s are going to be able to compete with GK110, and they very well might have their own price/performance range even if they do fall short

tweakboy FTW! You found totally new info before anyone else posted it here.

hehe you just combined 2 different generations as 1.

Sea Islands competes with GTX700 series Kepler
Volcanic Islands competes with Maxwell in 2014
Pirates Islands competes with Maxwell refresh I am guessing in 2015

You won't be upgrading until after Maxwell you are saying, or 2015 at the earliest?

How are we guessing the product names when AMD has changed the last few generations?

4890, 5870 and 6870 were good, 7870 was mid-range.

OCGuy, what do you mean by "were good" vs. "was mid-range"?

HD6870 was a mid-range product too. The reason HD7870 was priced so high is because NV was late. HD8850/8870 are mid-range Sea Islands products. Right now no new info has leaked about HD8950/8970 parts but we can expect them to compete against some higher end GTX700 series. If NV is late again with GTX700 series, and HD8850/8870 end up as fast as GTX670-680, it's possible they will again be $299-349. It's hard to say since we don't know their actual launch date, NV will once again be behind by 6 months+ or if their performance actually lives up to the GTX670 level claims.

Also, the article mentions that AMD continues to push towards Heterogeneous System Architecture:

"For 2015 the current codename is "Pirates Islands", this lineup reportedly brings tribute to pirates like Blackbeard, Captain Hook, and Captain Jack Sparrow. AMD's engineers are targeting the 20nm process with 14nm APUs in mind, but work on these chips only started recently. By 2016, AMD should have completed its Islands cadence, and the GPU should have equal capabilities of communications as the CPU and be able to directly address and accelerate CPU routines."

The key redesign and shift towards compute has been AMD's new strategy starting with Fusion. GCN was the first major redesign on the GPU side to allow AMD to go towards this route. The next steps are natural evolution of bringing GPU and CPU closer such as Unified Address Space, shared memory, GPU Pre-emption. Nvidia is expected to follow suit with these technologies as well.

Both NV and AMD definitely want to push the GPU towards being a more general purpose computing device to expand the usefulness of these devices outside the general gaming needs.

Does this mean that by 2015 there will be atleast 1 video game out with graphix good enough to justify my current rig?

Article is all screwed up. First they talk about discreet GPU code names, and then they talk about unified address space and claim it's unique to Sea Islands. Except unified address space refers to IGP, and I'll bet my left nut that Sea Islands isn't going to be in an IGP next year.

And then they go off and start saying the 2014 GPU will compete with Xeon Phi. Phi isn't a GPU.

Xeon Phi may not be a GPU, but it is designed to do the type of things that AMD and nVidia are trying to get people to use GPGPU for. It'll compete with it in the HPC/workstation market, not the graphics market.

The "Sea Islands" code name is kind of unfortunate, since both it and the current 7000 series code names' abbreviations are S.I.

It's needlessly confusing, but I guess that's typical for AMD's marketing branch.

Which part of the engineering department's internal code names did marketing have a say in? It is not like you will ever see it written on the box...
