For the longest time they said the desktop processors would ship before the server ones did.

Usually this is never a good sign since the server processors are designed to run at different thermal envelopes for different workloads.

But Desktop chisp are running at higher clocks, with more cores, and a lower TDP than Thuban. How does that work?

32nm SOI w/HKMG versus 45nm SOI w/doped-poly & nitrided gates.

The "are running" part though is entirely an assumption on our part...something is not running given the delay on AMD's part in releasing them.

That's a very restrictive perspective. I don't like AMD or Intel, I like good high-end gaming processors. Right now, AMD has none. So I'm waiting to see how BD performs to buy either that, if it's good, or Sandy Bridge, it it's not.

Of, course, maybe they aren't :)

Interlagos is a socket G34 with 12 or 16 cores (dual BD dies in the same Pin Grid Array).

In order to keep the same TDP (130W) as Desktop BDs (maximum 8 core) they have to lower the clock speed.

8 core Valencia (single BD die) could have higher core speeds as it is Socket C33 cpu and directly desktop derivative.

that still does not sound too good even if it is in line with JF's original claims. I would vote for just taking the llano design, axing the GPU, and adding more cores. I mean you could fit what... 10 of those in 300mm^2 or less? double the die and 20 cores. For reference, CPU-world lists llano as 228mm^2

Power consumption for Llano is nothing to write home about...it uses about the same power as the 2500k and is considerably slower.

Power consumption in Llano is its greatest strength. This is the first time that AMD has ever been on par with intel in terms of notebook battery life, and the performance delivered by quad core Llano is completely adequate.

I miss the days when you could buy 1 motherboard, then choose between Cyrix, Intel or AMD, depending on finances and performance.

Those really were the days! Although... I don't miss adjusting the FSB via jumpers...

Power consumption for Llano is nothing to write home about...it uses about the same power as the 2500k and is considerably slower.

Yes, performance/watt (for CPU workloads anyway) for Llano is low compared to SB. But most consumers care about battery life absolute, not performance/watt.


Also, Llano makes gaming on battery life possible, which is reasonably impressive.


AMD did a fantastic job on power usage in Llano. But none of that changes the fact that K10 is an old, old architecture. Considering what they were working with, it is very impressive.
