I'm a little disappointed....

290x , 390x and now the 480? all basically the same performance.
So the only upgrade path is for people with 370/380 cards or Fiji for the next 8 months?
WHat is AMD smoking?

That said, for someone like me the 480 does look like a nice card for my 1080p monitor, if it has gtx980 performance for 239$.Then again, I will also see what the 1060 is like first ,or mabe a price drop on the 1070?

Hawaii and Fiji users gotta wait or jump ship to $400+ Nvidia. Even 380X users could upgrade. Sort of silly since they could have had Hawaii already, but some people maybe didn't want the higher power consumption I guess.

Not having high end for BF1 is a mistake, no way around it. The Battlefields have driven my upgrades for years and I'm quite sure this is true for many other people.

2x 480 for BF1 will probably do very well.

Considering DICE said they wanted DX12 mandatory by the end of this year I'd be very surprised to not see them support it in BF1.

Obviously dual card isn't best for every case but its still cheaper than the 1080.

They will compete? The 1060 and 1050 are unannounced products. Both are rumored for a fall release. AMD has free reign on the biggest portion of the market until Nvidia shows up.

GTX 1060 would probably have to be better on price/performance than the 1070 or 1080 if the RX480 is as fast as a GTX 980 for $200.

Right but we are talking about for BF1, which has had good support for crossfire and helped develop Mantle so should have good DX12 version and thus multi card support

Because they don't exist. We know they are coming, but have no real ideea on perf or price, we can only guess based on past iterations. And based on that, seems that this gen AMD smokes nVidia in mainstream. Also, not having even a hint about a launch date, and AMD looking like will flood the market with high number of boards, they are missing the wave of people that currently can't but want 1080/60fps gaming at 200$. And AMD has the only answer for them right now. Well, for us 🙂

As I have a 1080 monitor and no intention to change it in the next few years, and 480 looking like could deliver solid over 60fps and low power, it might hit home for me. And I bet many are thinking the same. And it looks like no equivalent board from nVidia in the next few months. So AMD has the low-mid-midhigh end to itself if they deliver the quantity.

Any board, from nVidia or AMD in 28nm are getting smoked by this.... Noone will want to buy 28nm when this gets launched. Also the SH market might take a hit in prices

Its an easy guess, real easy to predict the performance of the 1060 and 1050 vs the 470 and 480.

As I have a 1080 monitor and no intention to change it in the next few years, and 480 looking like could deliver solid over 60fps and low power, it might hit home for me.

But really you have had your "home run" for quite a while , its called a 220$ 380x or $250 gtx970. Prices are going up on these products now but there was a time when it was possible. The 970 is what 150 watts? Last I checked they seem fine for 1080p and have been out for years. For me these cards are not quite the upgrade I want from a gtx960 4gb overclocked though. I want to double my performance, at least.
I wont be on 1080p forever.

Then please look into your crystal ball and tell us about the 1060's price and performance, oh great seer. 😛 Really, we can guess all day (and it probably will be competitive) but we have no information on the 1060 or when it will launch, while the only thing we really don't know about the RX 480 is how much stock AMD will have on launch.

Heck, they are positioning 470 as 1080/60. Also, being burned by nVidia last time I will camp with team red for a while...

Don't know if i'd recommend those to anyone but someone who must have Nvidia and is on a tight budget. Mostly because they will have cut bus and other bits possibly. Besides, we know how much of a value proposition was 960 at launch. I doubt that the value offered willl improve even after 6 months after launch. Nvidia knows its customers will pay. The lowest i see them going for 1060 is about $250 or so, which means no need to drop prices on 1070 for Nvidia buyers. 1050 and 1040 if any 1040 exists, can be priced lower still. Why would you leave money on table when people buy whatever it is you're selling, at whatever ridiculous price.

480 is a good option for those waiting with older cards. AMD cards are also aging well. I know it sounds weird, but most people do keep their cards for 2 years if not more.

What happens when amd releases the 490 and 490x and above? Why does everyone assume the 1070/1080 are the only cards?

Like I've said before, I think Nvidia has the better move. High-end gamers are more likely to upgrade on day 1. Mainstream gamers will see amd launch first but will have no problem waiting to see how Nvidia will counter.

Who said every gamer plays games day 1? This is only on enthusiast forums where this is a massive issue.

Also the stipulation for 1080p/60fps doesn't mean ultra every single setting for people in the 470 class of performance. I doubt they mean that.... They're not targeting that style gamer when they say 1080p / 60 fps on an e3 gaming show. They're talking console class 1080p/60 fps....

GPUs have always launched over a period of time.

AMD's desire to win back marketshare is driving their approach and so they launch for the $100 to $300 range that allows them to capture the masses. NV's GP106 is simply not ready for retail.

NV's options are to price cut on existing 960, 970 and 980 lineups until GP106 SKUs are in retail, but I doubt there's much stock left so it's a no competition between AMD & NV for the moment.

As to which is the better approach, we can determine that when we have the results for Q3 and Q4 dGPU.

Vega's HBM2 stacking validation is under way currently. I posted a video source from eSilicon & Amkor's presentation on this topic awhile back.

It's due to hit mass production in September.

AMD can indeed launch Vega in October if they wanted to. Certainly if they really wanted to do a proper paper launch earlier (like the 1070/1080), they can just pre-announce it a month ahead, seed reviewers with samples for published reviews, then ship really low volumes and it will be out of stock everywhere.

I mean it's a good move, since what else are they selling on the high end? Nothing. So a paper launch of a high-end GPU isn't going to hurt them one bit.

Well I signed up when Anandtech and Dailytech were one, so I could comment and rate comments. 🙂

I feel the need to upgrade the video card so I started getting up to speed with what's new. Entered the forums in search of newly released info for this new gen. of cards and this is a pretty big forum. Got the general direction of where things are going and being a first big node change in many years, I think it should come with big changes in performance. NVidia did but didn't keep the prices. Even though I'm no target for 1070/80 that would surely mean 1050/60 goes up so... I hope AMD relly delivers. Couldn't stand the half truths and "focus groups" that try to channel some directions and felt the need to intervene.

Sidenote, I just realize my video card is approaching 4 years. Dang!

From what I gather, most people believe that both the 480 and 470 are cut-down Polaris 10 (so-called C7 and C4) while full Polaris 10 (C10) is going to Apple (ala Tonga).

And RX 460 is also likely to be a cut down Polaris 11. There's two variants, 1024 and 1280 SP.

Apple would want the best Polaris 11 chips to put into their MacBooks.

Before somebody says Apple doesn't sell that many....

They move ~5 million Macs per quarter. Though not all of it will have a dGPU, but the average price of a MacBook sold is quite higher than their entry level models. This means at my estimate, at least a third of them have dGPU.

I makes perfect sense to use full die and binning for low watt for mobile. Especially for amd as they hide behind a stronger brand.

I don't think it sucks if what we get as top SKUs for each die is not far behind the fully enabled SKUs in all metrics. If we get something like 25% disabled resources, 20% lower frequency and same TDP, then yes, it sucks.
