AMC Entertainment, which owns the second-largest movie theater chain in North America, is in talks to sell the company or a significant stake in it to the Wanda Group, one of China’s largest theater owners, according to people briefed on the discussions.

AMC has been owned since 2004 by an investment group that includes the Apollo Investment Fund, J. P. Morgan Partners, Bain Capital Investors, the Carlyle Group and others.

this country is getting sold out and quick.

I don't care if foreigners control our capital, there's always a chance they'll treat the workers better, maybe bring more jobs (Asian car manufacturers are increasingly creating more jobs here, for example).

I no longer trust American capitalists, those greedy fucks are guaranteed to sell out the average working American.

Control and own. At the very least they should be subject the rules they impose on Americans in China (which are designed to make sure Chinese are ultimately in control). Ideally though, we wouldn't be trading with a totalitarian country that has horrible working conditions. Have you seen the working conditions in China? You think they're going to have better working conditions here? Where would you possibly get that idea?

So you trust Chinese capitalists acting in a totalitarian environment even more? That doesn't make any sense.

They couldn't be any WORSE than your average American capitalist. I'd actually think a Chinese owner would have to be more careful because there would be more media backlash if working conditions at, using this example, AMC were worse after their takeover.

The Wanda Group have built and operated some really nice city centers throughout china. If they do anything similar in the US then it would be a boon for America.

Ah yes, AMC is being sold. Along with movie theaters, before long the Chinese will own all the growth companies of the 21st century: 3dFX, U.S. Robotics, Xerox, America Online, and no doubt Chrysler.

Exactly what I was thinking. Who gives a fuck if they buy into a dying industry.

It does to a hardcore leftist. If you assume America and capitalism are evil, then everything else must be good, relatively at least.

As far as this being a dying industry, we're designing theaters for a couple chains as fast as we can get them done. Movies are still a big, thriving business. Sad to see some of it going to China, but that's the price we pay for out sourcing. The Red Chinese aren't collecting dollars to wall paper with little green portraits of dead Americans. They use their dollars strategically, investing in debt, property and American corporations. Put American capitalist manufacturers out of business and use the profits to buy the resources and to take over the service industries. The Republicans tolerate it in the name of the free market, and the Democrats tolerate it because at least they aren't evil American capitalists.

It is just a matter of time before the Chinese splice in subliminal messages in our movies that make us all buy our products that are made in China. I predict the that our manufacturing base will be decimated.

The worst part is most of these Chinese made products will be shit we don't even need.

Hmmm... when have I heard this before? Oh yes, I remember now! It was back in the '80s when people were saying the same thing about the Japanese and how they were buying up everything. Somehow, we're still here. No the sky is not falling.

Because they have to follow American labor law for any employee hired/working in the US?

They were the only possible suitor at this point. A lot of other US companies and private funds had kicked the tires but AMC is carrying way too much debt and and ongoing operating losses for a number of reasons. I'd expect most of their top management to be gone soon after the deal closes.
