AMBOY direct is offering 4.75% APY on online savings accounts. They're website is a little short on the details but it says no minimums and no fees, other than that it seems like a run of the mill online bank. Anyone who has an account with them please chime in.

Does anyone have any experience with these people? The rate is better than HSBC,ING and emigrant.

I saw this and for some reason I flashed back to the Amboy Dukes, a very early Ted Nugent band. Had a hit called Jouney to the Center of the Mind. here

yah, hsbc has dropped back to 4.50% starting this month. though other questions arise (i.e. what's the average transaction time between electronic transfers).

yea I've never heard of this bank either but bankrate.com lists them as having "118 yrs banking experience." I'm thinking I might start an account with them, has anyone here ever used this bank before?

Just to fairly compare... This is a yield. The APR will be in the 4.6% range. With all these rates popping up, are all these banks calculating the interest the same way? Is it a daily compound? Bi-daily?

APY is the actual yield you will see with the money in one year, so that is always comparable to other bank's APYs. APR is what can vary with compounding and things.

Well I actually called my bank and they compound daily.

APY = 1/t ((1+r/n)^nt-1)
r=rate
n=compounds per year
t=years

Just to chime in. I thought this bank sounded familiar as I live just a few towns over from Amboy and now looking at there location realized they are the same. So as far as I know they are legit... well at least the B&M bank.

I don't have an account with them so can't comment more.

they are legit.

this is a good compilation of high interest savings/money market accounts (posted on my blog a few days ago):
http://www.emoneycentral.com/cgi-bin/display.cgi?db=db9&start=1

it doesn't seem that they've noticed the Amboy 4.75% yet, but if you got to Amboy's homepage, you won't find the 4.75%.

one thing to note is that the GMAC account is a money market account ( http://www.gmacbank.com/ ) and not a savings account.

From http://www.ratecatcher.com/

What are the Differences among Savings Accounts, Money Market Accounts, and Certificates of Deposit?

All three of these accounts are very safe, the differences lie in the interest rates, withdrawals allowed each month, the liquidity of the funds in the account, and the minimum initial deposit.

? A savings account is a very liquid investment that normally accrues less than 1% interest annually. The number of withdrawals per month are usually not limited. The initial deposit is usually low, with some accounts beginning at $1.

? A money market account is a semi-liquid fund that can currently earn anywhere between 1.39 and 4.60% APY. The amount of withdrawals each month is six. There is wide variance in the minimum initial deposit, but it is usually around $100.

? A certificate of deposit is an account with a wide variety of terms and conditions to choose from. Options to consider are: length of deposit, interest rate, and amount deposited. Withdrawals are discouraged and penalties usually occur if money is withdrawn before the certificate matures.

If, however, the Average Daily Balance of your GMAC Bank money market savings account is LESS than $500

2. The Monthly Service Charge for NON-Direct Deposit Accounts will be $7.50 per statement cycle.
