No, you can't die of insomnia.

JACK
Maybe I died already. Look at my face.

INTERN
You need to lighten up.

JACK
Can't you give me something?

You need healthy, natural sleep. Chew valerian root and get some more exercise.

The Intern ushes Jack to the door. They step into the hallway

The Intern walks away from Jack, picks up a chart.

JACK
I'm in pain.

INTERN (facetious)
You want to see pain? Swing by First Methodist Tuesday nights. See the guys with testicular cancer. That's pain.

If you're not getting enough vitamin D and sun it can make a difference too. Not overexposure, but enough sun every day (30 minutes) and moderate exercise. Tasks that challenge the brain like other have said help. Do get checked for ADD though.

Try "breathe right" strips. I used them for the first time last night, and I slept really great - waaay better than normal. Plus the wifey is overjoyed that for once I didn't snore.

ambien doesn't work well if you have full stomach. i took it on empty stomach, with pepcid (to get ride of excess stomach acid from no food- so i don't die choking on stomach acid while on sleeping pills).

i hear lunesta is strong so you have better hallucinating effect.

my doctor only gave me 10 ambien instead of 30, so with lunesta he might prescribe more. they are both expensive unless you have good health insurance.

If IQ had anything to do with problems sleeping, half of anandtech would have died of sleep deprivation, and a few people probably would have never made it past embryonic stages. Fortunately it has little to do with sleep problems.

Marked, cause I know exactly how you feel. I havn't slept more than 2-3 hours at a time for months now, frequently "pass out" during the day, can't sleep at ALL during the night. Schedule goes something like this: Class (falling asleep during some), pass out until 10pm or so, wake up, do homework, get breakfast, go to class. Breakfast = lunch for me, classes are at the end of the day, and dinner is breakfast. wtf.

Yep. It's total and absolute misery through and through.

Now if you can get your hands on some percocet you will sleep like a baby.

Huh? I was on percocet for 5 weeks straight when I broke my leg a few years back and they caused me to be restless and not get any sleep at all. I didn't return to normal sleep patters until I was off those painkiller. That's not what the drug is for anyway. It's for pain, not sleep. To the OP: sounds like you may be depressed, thus you should see your doctor and find out why you can't sleep.

I find it quite easy to fall asleep after a half bottle of UV or a 24pack. Or you could just smoke weed, either one knocks me out if I want to sleep.

- 150 IQ

*****
I was about to ask what your IQ was.

I suspected this and it makes more sense to me now.

You said you have tried everything, but have you? Don't go the pills route just yet.

Questions..

Are you taking caffeine in any form after about 6pm?

Do you try to read every night, stay active mentally ect?

I am not 100% sure I can relate to your directly. Everyone is different, but fire back at me. I am curious on why you can't either run yourself into the ground with technical reading ect.. or if that just makes you more wide awake.

Edit. Also, you mentioned a high level of physical activity.

What time of day or night is this taking place?

It has a lot to do with sleep problems for some people.

Unforunately, most of them also have the mindset that sleep is a waste of time.

Sleep is over rated. The last couple of nights, my gf said I got up went into the bathroom turned on the faucet and went back to bed leaving the faucet on.

1. I don't drink caffeine at all. I've found that if I do, I won't sleep for two minutes that night, regardless of when I drank it.

2. I don't try to stay mentally active, but my mind just starts wondering all over the place. I think about work, my hobbies, the kids - you name it.

3. The physical activity takes place right when I get home from work (I do it as early as possible), which is at 5:00. I'll run anywhere from 3 - 6 miles depending on how badly I want to sleep that night. It does help, but only to a very small degree and I have to literally beat my ass into the ground for it to work.

*Exactly*

I simply do not like to sleep. That definitely doesn't mean I don't know I need it... but "turning off" is impossible; too much else I want to get done.

If that's what you really think it's all about, then you had no business posting in the thread to begin with.

I sometimes rationalize myself to sleep. I have times where I'm an insomeac, <sp> and what gets me to sleep is realising that thinking about whatever I'm thinking about is way less productive the then sleeping would be; I'll do a better job tomorrow, be able to think clearer, whatever applies to the situation if I get some real sleep tonight. I also have the ADD/smart person thing going on, but I'm also rational, and I have to appeal to my rational side if I want to give myself an answer that works for me (so I can sleep). I started it in middle school, and it's the only way I get a good nights sleep sometimes.

Lunesta didnt work for me, although ambien CR every other night or so was helpful. Alot of good suggestions re: caffiene and exercise. Also make a bedtime ritual, don't read or watch TV when in bed (only for sleep..and such).

Can often indicate underlying depresion as well...been screened?

Evidence please? This is completely illogical. Those who exercise their brain the hardest need sleep the most. Anyone who has spent 8 hours playing chess or working on a complex computer programming task can attest to this. Same for people who work out the most. That is the way the body works. It's true that if you are doing something monotonous for long periods of time, it can be difficult to go to sleep immediately because you close your eyes and see the stuff you've been doing for 8 hours. Kind of like LCD burning of the brain. This can occasionally include intelligent activities like chess and theorethical physics. But I don't think that intelligence has any direct impact on sleep disorders, and I would like to see some evidence that this is true.

Sounds like an egostistical assumption to me. "I'm so intelligent that I can't sleep." Makes no more sense than saying "I'm so intelligent that I can't pee"
